Event description

Description

Join us on Thursday, September 12th for a special opportunity to tour the recently completed sturgeon passage facility at the Menominee Dam in Menominee, MI. You will witness the elevator inside the dam’s powerhouse that lifts fish up into the sorting facility and see the process for moving selected sturgeon upstream and downstream via the “fish waterslide” bypass. You will also hear an overview and see pictures of the entire project.

There are two tour options:

Thursday, September 12th: 2pm - 3:30pm
Thursday, September 12th: 6pm - 7:30pm

More about this project:

At the Menominee and Park Mill dams, owned and operated by Eagle Creek Renewable Energy, the historically important lake sturgeon will get help making its migration to spawn. Both dams have been retrofitted to allow the sturgeon to move upstream and downstream past the 2 dams. Fish passage allows the adult sturgeon access to excellent spawning habitat upstream and return back to Green Bay. Their offspring are also afforded access to great juvenile habitat and eventually migration to Green Bay. Recovery of the sturgeon in the Menominee River and Green Bay depends on the sturgeon being able to migrate safely past these dams. Their upstream movement is carefully controlled so that invasive species and unwanted fish cannot move upstream. Downstream passage is now available for sturgeon and other fish in the Menominee River.

Nearly $6 million of funding for this project came from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Significant funding was also provided by Eagle Creek and the Fund for Lake Michigan. The project was built because of the cooperation and able assistance of many organizations, including Wisconsin DNR, Michigan DNR, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and River Alliance of Wisconsin.

Advance registration is required and space is limited. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied and closely monitored by an adult. All attendees must complete a liability waiver.
