When you were 18 years’ old who was the most influential person in your life? Maybe it was a teacher, a counselor, a coach, a manager or a youth leader. Maybe no one came to mind.

For Alexus Garza, no one came to mind. Here is her Mentor Story in her own words:

"I am very grateful that YFC introduced me to my current mentor (Lourdes Rivera).

Coming from a background of inconsistency in my life, I wasn’t sure the relationship would hold. When I was at the mentor mixer last year a question was asked, “If you feel like someone in your life is proud of you, please cross over the line.” I was one of 2 people who didn’t cross over. After this encounter we got into small groups and Lourdes zoomed to be seated at my table. Lourdes showed immediate genuine interest in my life. She asked me intentional questions and affirmed me with kind words.

At our first official meet up, we automatically clicked and as more gathering and memories were made, a beautiful relationship was created. She constantly invites me to hang out with her even if I have told her 'no' numerous times before. We try new restaurants together, go thrift shopping together and we’ve even traveled to California together for a Christian conference! She has listened to me cry, laugh and be indecisive. Through it all she has spoken nothing but life and encouragement to me. She has been consistent, intentional, affirming and loving to me. She is someone who I love doing life with, a person I know to trust to share my vulnerability with. She has helped me grow in ways and has been an elder I look up to. She’s someone who I can say is proud of me now when I’m asked."

That’s the power of a mentor.

Did you know there are 46 million young people, aged 8-18, living in America and 16 million of them are growing up without a mentor? That’s one out of every three young people who, outside of their family at home, don’t have a trusted adult who they believe they can turn to for advice and guidance.

August 27 2019, 35 college aged leaders, like Alexus, who have been directly impacted by our mission of YFC walked through the doors of our office to begin their weekly Leader in Training (LIT) meetings.

Last year we saw the impact that one-on-one guidance had on these young leaders as they’re pouring out and serving on a weekly basis. These young leaders are college students struggling with academic, social, financial, life skills challenges and in most cases didn't have the role model support they need to thrive.

Think back to that question- When you were 18 who was the most influential person in your life? How different would your life been if you didn’t have that person? or How different would your life been if you did have an influential person?

We have made it our mission to get every single L.I.T. in a mentorship relationship this year after seeing the great need from the previous years. We are asking you to pray through committing to mentoring one L.I.T this school year.

Making the decision to become a mentor can be intimidating because there are many reasons why we immediately want to disqualify ourselves. The top three ones we have heard are: I don’t have the time. I’m too old or boring. I don’t know how.

But, I want to close with saying the most valuable thing we have to offer is our time. To be be a mentor means making time to be present to be a friend, to be a listener, to be an encourager and to simply be available.

As you pray, come have a little fun at our Mentor mixer with a little "Speed Mentoring" activities to see how you can make an impact in a young person’s life.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor, please register as soon as possible as we are limited on RSVPs.

How can you help if you’re not able to mentor?

Please spread the word and help recruit loving Christian adults who would want to mentor a college student. This can be people from church, family, friends or people in your community.

Thank you for your time! Please reach out with any questions you may have!

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Yes! Because this particular event is geared towards generating interest in mentoring college aged guys and gals, potential mentors must be at least 21 years old.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
