Event description

Description

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Social Determinants of Health as "the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels. The social determinants of health are mostly responsible for health inequities - the unfair and avoidable differences in health status seen within and between countries."

This conference will take an in-depth look at social determinants in health among the refugee and immigrant population as compared to the domestic-born individuals. Leading experts in the field of health equity, cultural humility, healthcare access, self-sufficiency, resettlement, and prevention come together to provide systemic overview, guidance, and recommendations to improve health outcome and resettlement - rewriting the refugee experience.

Conference keynote will be delivered by Dr. Melton (DBHDS Commissioner) and Dr. Powell (VDH Office of Health Equity Director). Followed by experts in the following areas/topics:

  • Plenary - Regional Community Health Assessment

  • Promises & Pitfalls of Cultural Competence

  • Health Care Access

  • Self-Sufficiency

  • Resettlement 101

  • Prevention - ACEs & TICs
