The 2019 Private Gardens of Historic Orlando Featuring Lake Eola Heights Historic District

Thank you for participating in the twelfth tour of the “Private Gardens of Historic Orlando”, this year featuring Lake Eola Heights. What started as a bi-annual tour of this neighborhood has become a yearly event featuring other historic neighborhoods throughout Orlando. For those of you who have attended before, welcome back! And for those visiting for the first time, we are happy to share Orlando’s largest locally registered district and the first to be on the National Register of Historic Places!

You may begin the tour wherever you wish. The 10 gardens on display are identified on the map in this brochure and by colorful banners in the parkway at each location. Visit as many as you wish. The tour begins at noon and ends at 5:00 pm.

All of the Gardens on today’s tour offer something special, which may inspire you with ideas for your own garden or may simply provide you with an enjoyable day in a beautiful setting. Stroll along beautiful brick streets dappled by sunlight that has been filtered through a veil of oak boughs and Spanish moss. Downtown homes often have small back yards. Some of the gardens highlighted on today’s tour are wonderful examples of how to turn these spaces into beautiful outdoor rooms. Other gardens are included because of the creative way various elements have been incorporated into the garden. There are also wonderful examples of how to bring the calming and recuperative effects of water into the garden ranging from fountains to swimming pools!

It is from her own garden that neighborhood artist Diane Martens found the inspiration for this year’s featured painting. The artwork has been incorporated into the tour’s posters and brochure. You can see more of Diane’s artwork at www.dianemartens.com. The signed original will be available for purchase via a silent auction at Garden Central.

We hope you will enjoy today’s tour and come back next year. And thank you for your support of this event. The proceeds that are generated from the Garden Tour will be used to support the neighborhood association and the Orange Preservation Trust.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

We are so happy you are interested in the tour!  Garden Central is where you start.  It is located at Broadway United Methodist Church, a neighborhood church located in the heart of Eola Heights at 406 E. Amelia Street, Orlando, FL 32803.  There  you will find your printed tour brochure and a map of all the gardens!  In the meantime, please click http://mapq.st/1FH1J0o to view the map of the gardens online.

We have several viable options available for parking this year:

The empty lot on the Southwest corner of Broadway and Amelia (across from Broadway Methodist Church at 406 E. Amelia) is free for parking, but is first come first serve.  It is only one block from Garden Central and the church has graciously opened their restrooms to the public for us.

Lastly, there is always available street parking in the neighborhood.  Watch for city parking signs as some streets have specific parking rules.

Check out our Facebook event as well.  We’ll be posting teaser pictures there all week!
