Event description

Description

The aim of the 2019 Prevent Suicide Hawaiʻi Statewide Conference is to bring together our community of survivors, advocates, educators, service providers, policymakers, and health professionals around the issue of suicide prevention. The conference will increase our awareness of suicide prevention, our skills to respond to those at risk, and our abilities to help those who have survived the loss of a loved one.

Five Conference tracks – Hope (primary prevention), Help (services/interventions), Healing (postvention/support for those impacted by suicide), Special Populations, and Culture – will feature dozens of local, national, and international experts in various areas of suicide prevention. In addition, we are excited to have Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, as our national keynote speaker (see her bio here: https://afsp.org/about-afsp/christine-moutier-m-d/).

We would also like to invite you to participate in two special events that have been scheduled in tandem with the main Conference:

1) Pre-conference workshop on Wednesday, 4/10/2019 – Suicide Bereavement Clinician Training – hosted and sponsored by the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This workshop will provide a focused overview of the impact of suicide on survivors, and the clinical and support responses that are needed after a suicide occurs. More information and registration instructions can be found here: https://afsp.org/event/suicide-bereavement-clinician-training/.

2) An evening reception on Thursday, 4/11/2019, is being planned. More details will be forthcoming.

We are immensely grateful to our Conference sponsors for making this event happen: 1) the Emergency Medical Services and Injury Prevention System Branch (EMSIPSB) under the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health; 2) the Department of Psychiatry under the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa; 3) the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; and 4) the Queen's Medical Center.

Some logistical notes:

1) CEUs have been approved by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) of the Hawai'i State Department of Health. Other continuing education approvals are pending. Updates will be provided as approvals are received.

2) Continental breakfast and lunch for both days are included in the Conference registration fee.

3) All participants should register at the EventBrite link (https://preventsuicidehi2019conference.eventbrite.com). Registration fees may be paid via credit card on the EventBrite site, or via check (payable to “Oʻahu Economic Development Board,” and mailed to OEDB at 735 Bishop Street, Suite 424, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, 96813). Checks must be received within two weeks of submitting the online form, to confirm registration. We are now also accepting State Purchase Orders (POs) if groups are unable to pay via credit card or direct check. Those paying via PO should still register via the EventBrite site, and select the "pay by check" option. Make POs out to “Oʻahu Economic Development Board,” and email a PDF copy to dbaba@oedb.biz. You will then receive an invoice from which to generate your payment check.

4) Questions may be directed to the planning committee at preventsuicidehi2019@dop.hawaii.edu.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE CONFERENCE, AS WE ALL CONTINUE OUR WORK TOGETHER TO PASS LIFE FORWARD!
