Event description

Description

Please join us for the fifth annual President's Frontier Award Lecture featuring 2019 awardee Dr. Brice Ménard.

Charles Commons, Salon B

2:00pm Lecture

3:00pm Reception

January 29, 2020

Dr. Brice Ménard combines astrophysics and Big Data to research galaxy formation and cosmology. His work has led to the detection of gravitational magnification by dark matter around galaxies and the discovery of tiny grains of dust in the intergalactic space that make the Universe less transparent. In 2019, he received the $250,000 President’s Frontier Award to continue developing a new tool called "the Sequencer." Based on the principles of statistical physics, this tool can automatically reveal deep underlying patterns and order from very large data sets.

Dr. Ménard is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

The symposium will be held at Charles Commons, 3301 N. Charles Street (10 E. 33rd Street), Baltimore 21218. There is a shuttle from the East Baltimore campus that stops at Charles Commons. (Note: The JHU transportation website says the Charles Commons stop is not operational, but we are told shuttles will stop there.) There is also a public garage across the street at 9 E. 33rd Street, as well as some street parking.
