Identifying the Young Gifted Child: Dynamic Assessment through Observation

Sally Beisser, PhD

Ellis and Nelle Distinguished Professor of Education at Drake University

Sunday, October 13, 2019

With an invitation to attend ITAG Parent Day from 3:00-5:00PM

Airport Holiday Inn, Des Moines, Iowa

Cost: $30 per person

This presentation encourages observation, questioning, portfolio development, and communication known as “dynamic assessment” to assess advanced learners in early childhood rather than “static assessments” through normative testing.

Dr. Beisser will distinguish static vs.dynamic assessment (Leaders Project, 2013) to explain that static assessment is determined by what a child already knows according to comparison to norms or set criteria. Dynamic assessment looks at a child’s ability to acquire or express skills or knowledge during anassessment. We will explore behaviors common to early gifted learners including:

1. Asynchronous development and/or self-critical behaviors

2. Early use of advanced vocabulary, complexity, and humor

3. Early literacy skills; interest in symbols

4. Excellent memory; retention from varied sources

5. Keen observation; curiosity and inquisitiveness

6. Intense interests in specific topics; concentration; perseverance; enjoys tinkering

7. Strong critical thinking skills; organizational skills

8. Creativity; imaginative capacity

9. Ability to understand complex concepts; thinks abstractly

10. Early demonstration of talents in music, art, athletics, or the performing arts

The workshop will conclude with time for participants to personalize these observations in their own programs or district. Bring your laptopsto create your own follow up documents to chart student behaviors of your pK-grade 3 advanced learners. We are all in this together!

Workshop participants are welcome to participate in ITAG's Parent Day activities which include presenters, exhibitors, and a resource fair. Parent Day runs until 5:00 PM. Dr. Beisser and her colleagues will present at Parent Day at 4:00PM.
