2019 Parish Nursing Institute


|Overview|

With the encouragement and participation of the Alberta Association of Parish Nurses, the Parish Nursing Institute was formed in 2017 as a response to a need among the profession for training and certification. The first institute was held in June of that year. The 2019 Institute will feature a robust and enriching time of learning, community, and reflection. Read through the schedule below to learn more about this wonderful gathering.

Friday, May 24 | 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. | Dinner Provided

Welcome, Introductions, and Community Building

This will be a time for all attendees to get to know each other and begin building the relational foundation for the rest of our time together. Joyce Bellous and Caryn Macdonald will facilitate our time this evening.


Saturday, May 25 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Introduction to Parish Nursing theory, Spiritual Assessment, Theological Reflection, and Pastoral Care

Parish nursing requires a broad range of knowledge and skills as well as certain dispositions that aid in our work. Joanne Olson and Margaret Clark will introduce us to a few of these areas.


Sunday, May 26 | 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. | Dinner Provided

Education, Case Studies, Experiential and Simulation-based Learning

Joyce Bellous and Irene Coulson will take us deeper in our topics by leading us through a series of interactive learning experiences.


Monday, May 27 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Mental Health, Grief, and Loss

In the morning sessions, Patricia Werbiski will teach us about Mental Health. For the afternoon, Caryn Macdonald will deepen our understanding of grief and loss.


Tuesday, May 28 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Theological and Ethical Reflection, Parish Nursing Practice and Working with Volunteers

Throughout the morning, David Williams will lead us through conversations about Theological and Ethical Reflection. Kathy and Bruce will spend the afternoon with us as we look at the practice of parish nursing and the nuances of working with volunteers.


Wednesday, May 29 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Parish Nursing as Referral Agent, Legal Issues

Elaine Domning will provide her thoughts on how parish nurses can be referral agents while Paula Kinoshita will walk us through legal issues we may need to consider.


Thursday, May 30 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Healing and Worldview, Suffering and Healing in a Biblical Perspective

Over the course of the day, Allan Effa will teach about these important topics.


Friday, May 31 | 9:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. | Dinner Provided

Healing in the Christian Tradition, Developing Rituals of Healing and Healing Services, Closing Service of Dedication.

Allan Effa will continue working with us on the topic of healing. At 5:00 p.m., Joyce Bellous will lead us through a closing Dedication Service. Following the service, at 6:30 p.m., we will end our time together with a dinner to which guests will be invited.

Notes:

  • Registration opens on August 1, 2018 and closes on May 1, 2019.
  • $200 of the registration cost is for work books and meals. The remaining portion is tuition/fees.
