New Mobility: Automotive Industry Business Models

Our 4th New Mobility Conference looks at the numerous New Mobility businesses and projects throughout the industry to see how it plans to manage and, of course, profit from these ventures in the short term but most likely in the long term. The industry historically has been challenged to profit from ventures outside designing, developing, and manufacturing vehicles, which itself is an extremely challenging and competitive industry. Understanding how companies view these lines of business in the context of their main business offers insights into how New Mobility fits into long term strategy. Monetizing New Mobility lines of business creates a new variable and cost in a company’s planning, forcing companies to potentially divert funding from new vehicle programs, the lifeblood of a company in the industry.

This year our speakers will discuss differing strategies the industry may apply including mergers and acquisitions, alliances, and complete ownership of new companies. Based on their long experience in the industry and studying the industry, they will provide analysis about what is happening and what may happen in the near future. The different types of New Mobility businesses and projects, the integration of these efforts within the company, potential New Mobility businesses, timelines for success, and maybe even the introduction of a new line of business will all be discussed.

Some of the key questions we will address include: How are auto industry companies organized to succeed in their New Mobility businesses or projects? Are there proven business models that apply to these efforts? How challenging is it for the auto industry to develop a direct consumer relationship that is not run through its dealer body? What are the major hurdles to overcome in introducing New Mobility technologies or services? How do companies manage and integrate new business lines that are not auto-focused compared to ones that are based on autos? How do companies recruit talent to support these new businesses?

Confirmed speakers include:

Bruce Belzowski, Managing Director, Automotive Futures, will moderate the conference and present his research on the different New Mobility lines of business.

Brian Wu, Associate Professor in Strategy at the UM Ross School of Business, will discuss his research on firms’ strategies for reconfiguring their business portfolios in dynamic environments, and how industry evolution is driven by entry, exit, and incumbent adaptation. These two streams are linked by a common concern with how competitive advantage is created and destroyed when industry landscapes are reshaped by economic, technological, and institutional factors.

Other manufacturers, suppliers, government representatives, and consultants have been invited

Upcoming Events

  • April 24, 2019: Real World Driving: Government Regulations and Consumer Response. The changes taking place in how emissions are measured in vehicles will most likely decrease the average fuel economy stickers and provide consumers with a more reliable estimate of fuel economy. How will consumers respond to reduced fuel economy estimates? How will future government regulations affecting emissions adjust to account for new real world emissions? How is this playing out in the EU as well as the US?

  • July 17, 2019: Powertrain Strategies for the 21st Century. Our 11th annual conference focuses on the key topics affecting powertrains globally as well as the US. As the conference nears, we will develop the conference topic based current events with an eye towards the next 5-10 year timeframe.
