Event description

Description

At Middle School GPS, Alabama public middle school science educators will experience a free one-day workshop that emphasizes the genetics components of the Alabama 7th grade Life Science course of study. These regional professional development workshops provide updated content knowledge and resources to support Alabama public middle school life science educators.

In this second round of workshops, MS GPS: Pet Genetics, educators will engage with pet-themed storylines and new resources focused on COS Standards 11, 13 and 14. From digging into the domestication of dogs and cats, to simulating the inheritance patterns of fancy goldfish, to examining the role of enzymes in rare neurological disorders in cats, this one day workshop uses our cuddly friends to make genetics content approachable.

The Mobile Middle School GPS Workshop will be held on October 3rd from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at the AMSTI-USA center.

*Registration is limited to educators who teach full-time in an Alabama public school who are teaching one or more sections of 7th Grade Life Science.

HudsonAlpha educators will lead teachers through a full day of utilizing models, cutting-edge genomics research and pedagogical strategies to bring real-world genetics content to their classrooms. Teachers will leave the workshop with eight hours of professional learning and two newly-developed kits to take back to the classroom. Additionally, teachers will be reimbursed for their substitute costs, up to $70.

Middle School GPS is made possible through support from the State of Alabama.

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is a not-for-profit research institute in Huntsville, AL with a strong emphasis on genetics education for students, educators, and the public.
