Description

The 2019 Military & Veterans Mental Health Summit is a free, full day event that highlights the importance of suicide prevention and how suicides impact military members and their families.

Theme: Military Sexual Trauma

Keynote Address by Pauline Thompson, PhD.

"Trauma Behind the Frontlines: A Story of Sexual Harassment and Assault and a Journey of Healing".

Breakout Sessions

Community Track

  • Behavioral Health Issues Facing Veterans - Participants will gain understanding of veteran characteristics, discuss behavioral health issues influencing veterans' quality of life, discuss barriers and challenges impacting veterans help seeking, and discuss elements that promote and encourage veterans help seeking.
  • Recovery from Military Sexual Trauma - An overview of the nature and stage model of recovery from sexual trauma will be provided. A panel of Veterans who have experienced MST will share their personal journey of recovery toward building a sense of hope, safety, wellness, meaning and reconnection. Resources for starting the recovery journey will also be provided.
  • Suicide Bereavement - A discussion of how suicide bereavement is different from mourning after other types of death, the social processes surrounding the survivor, the impact suicide has on family systems, problems with employing methodology with suicide loss bereavement compared with bereavement experiences other than suicides.

Clinical Track

  • Military Sexual Trauma: Case Conceptualization & Common Dynamics in MST-Related Treatment - An overview of the definition and prevalence of MST and the VA's response.
  • Evidence Based Practices for Trauma - A discussion of evidence-based practices for trauma recovery, including their core concepts and interventions, theoretical underpinnings and practical challenges.
  • Intimate Partner Violence - An overview of IPV in the US and the Department of Veteran Affaris best practices in providing trauma-informed behaviroal health care for those who experience and use violence in intimate relationships.


4 Social Work CEUs will be given.
