Event description
This three-day summit gathers leaders who seek to enhance communities through arts and culture from around the Midwest.

About this Event

How can supporting places with art and culture help create thriving and sustainable communities?

The more diverse and connected a community is, the more it can adapt to change and stress. At its best, creative placemaking can foster equity, discourage displacement, and mitigate the effects of gentrification. In rural places, it can usher in much-welcomed new resources. All the while, the honoring of identities and interconnectivity can bring us all closer together. See below for more on themes!

THEMES

Health

Arts and culture can improve mental and physical health. How can creative placemaking support healing, prevention, and greater access to healthy food, a safe environment, and physical activity for everyone? In particular, we will be exploring how creative placemaking can promote and deepen relationships between isolated neighbors, particularly in aging, immigrant, and rural communities.

Placekeeping

In urban centers, arts and artists are often blamed for gentrification that can lead to displacement. Conversely, people in rural places may be concerned about outmigration and a loss of vitality. Hear from people who have explored creative placemaking approaches in both contexts that address the particular challenges of a place.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion

Art gives us a new lens to connect with each other. Engage with creative placemakers who have intentional strategies for including all people, making systems more just, and healing divisions.

Climate Change

Enter into discussions with creative placemakers who have worked with communities to recover from natural disasters and prepare for future ones. Hear from practitioners who are using arts and culture as a tool to increase awareness of climate change and build more resilient places.
