Description

2019 MBONGUI SQUARE FESTIVAL

Mbongui Square Festival is a interdisciplinary arts festival that promotes ethnic diversity and encourages the intersectionality of art forms. This event creates a bridge between local, national and international artists to enrich the local experience and reinforce the vision of a society that coalesces through the art of dance, music, spoken word poetry, and visual arts.

Organized by Kiandanda Dance Theater, the festival gathers dance, music, visual arts and spoken word artists of varied styles and artistic choices, from the Bay Area and across the world.

Launched in 2012, Mbongui Square Festival came from artistic Director Byb Chanel Bibene's aspiration to strengthen the concept of community through the arts in the San Francisco Bay Area. The artists from diverse art forms and backgrounds present their creative and artistic work on a shared and unique platform.

In the Kongo language of Central Africa, Mbongui is a place where the community gathers. Mbongui means togetherness and it upholds values of hospitality, free speech, justice, equity, and moral societal codes.

TEMESCAL ART CENTER : 511 48th Street, Oakland, CA 94609

//BYB BIBENE// Byb Kongo Bibene presents Nkisi Nkondi: A Divine Sculpture from Central Africa, a public talk which reveals the not so told functions of the minkisi minkondi, the sacred statues found in the great kingdom of Kongo, central Africa. The minkisi were power figures used by individuals, families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath taking, and resolve disputes. A diviner or holy person would activate the statue, using magical substances. In this presentation, Bibene draws a portrait of Central Africa before and after colonization, with social, political, and religious implications. He also mentions the intersectionality between the Kongo Cosmology via the Kongo cosmogram called Dikenga Kia Nza Kongo and the bodily movement in the life cycles. The talk precedes a demonstration of the state of the body while in communion with the physical and metaphysical worlds.

Born and raised in the Republic of Congo, Byb Chanel Bibene is a choreographer and artistic director of Kiandanda Dance Theater. His own technical and aesthetic sensibility is rooted in the culture and traditional dances of his country.
