About the GCLEA

The GCLEA was established by the Georgia General Assembly and Governor Nathan Deal in 2014 to improve the lives of Georgia residents who live with lupus by improving public education and awareness, improving access to resources for patients and family members, obtaining information that will inform current and future public health efforts and increasing appropriate diagnosis of lupus by non-rheumatologists. What is Lupus?

Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack one’s body. The disease is characterized by the inflammation of various healthy tissues and organs in the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels and brain. The severity of the disease may vary because no two cases of lupus are exactly alike. Learn More

Awareness

While lupus is a widespread disease, awareness of the disease lags behind many other illnesses.

Among Americans ages 18-34, 72 percent of those polled have either not heard about lupus or know little or nothing about lupus beyond the name. This is particularly disturbing because this is the age group at greatest risk for the disease.

Diagnosis

On average, it takes nearly six years for people with lupus to be diagnosed, from the time they first notice their lupus symptoms.A majority of people with lupus surveyed (63 percent) report being incorrectly diagnosed. Of those reporting incorrect diagnosis, more than half of them (55 percent) report seeing four or more different healthcare providers for their lupus symptoms before being accurately diagnosed.

Hotel Accommodations

As a courtesy of the GCLEA, hotel accommodations may be made upon request for those traveling outside of the Metro Atlanta area(in the registration form) until Friday, August 24, 2019. GCLEA will cover (1) night room and tax at the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Perimeter Center for your convenience.
