Description

2019 LOC Summer Movies on the Lawn

The July 11 screening of Mary Poppins has been TENTATIVELY RESCHEDULED for August 22.

Thursday, July 11
8:30pm (ET) - Film begins at sunset
*Event will end upon film completion

"Mary Poppins" (Walt Disney Pictures, 1964) 139 min.

Alleged to be Walt Disney's personal favorite from all of his many classic films, "Mary Poppins" is based upon a book by P.L. Travers. With Travers' original tale as a framework, screenwriters Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, with the aid of songwriters the Sherman Brothers (Richard M. and Robert B.), fashioned an original movie musical about a most unusual nanny. Weaving together a witty script, an inventive visual style and a slate of classic songs (including "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee"), "Mary Poppins" is a film that has enchanted generations. Equal parts innocent fun and savvy sophistication, the artistic and commercial success of the film solidified Disney's knack for big-screen, non-cartoon storytelling and invention. With its seamless integration of animation and live action, the film prefigured thousands of later digital and CGI-aided effects. The cast, headed by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, also includes Jane Darwell, Glynis Johns and Ed Wynn, "Mary Poppins" has remained a "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" achievement. "Mary Poppins" was added to the National Film Registry in 2013.

Located between the Supreme Court and the Jefferson Building, 10 First St., SE (running the length of East Capitol Street between First and Second Streets, SE), the north lawn of the Jefferson Building provides a comfortable space for people to watch the feature films. Moviegoers are welcome to bring picnics.

Join us every Thursday starting Thursday, July 11 for awesome flicks from the National Film Registry.

The series is part of the Library's annual programming theme to explore America's changemakers. It kicks off with Walt Disney’s first live-action movie to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and ends with the first film in which computer-generated characters interacted with human actors on screen:

The Library of Congress and Washington Performing Arts’ Mars Urban Arts Initiative will co-host the first “Summer Concerts on the Lawn” outdoor musical performance series. The performances will be presented in conjunction with the "LOC Summer Movies on the Lawn" — a six-film series which showcases iconic films from the Library’s National Film Registry — on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm from July 11 through Aug. 15 on the north lawn of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, across the street from the U.S. Capitol. The film screenings will follow the musical performances at sundown.
