"Jaws" (Universal Pictures, 1975) 124 min.

This now-classic thriller opens on a hot summer weekend in a small coastal New England resort community whose safety and financial livelihood are threatened by an apparent shark attack. The town's new sheriff (Roy Scheider) plans to close the beaches but meets opposition from the mayor and local business owners. When a young boy is killed by a shark in full view of a beach full of tourists, the sheriff must take action, joining with an experienced shark hunter, Capt. Quint (Robert Shaw), and an oceanographer (Richard Dreyfus) to pursue the Great White. As Brody adroitly observes after their first encounter with the shark, they're gonna need a bigger boat ... or at least plenty of moxie. Adapted by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb from Benchley's best-selling novel, the film is expertly, if manipulatively, crafted by director Steven Spielberg and an unforgettable score by John Williams to terrify its audience. Fueled by a successful ad campaign and phenomenal word of mouth and repeat business, "Jaws" broke box-office records and fueled sequels and imitators eager to capitalize on audiences willingly seduced by their own fear. "Jaws" was added to the National Film Registry in 2001.

Located between the Supreme Court and the Jefferson Building, 10 First St., SE (running the length of East Capitol Street between First and Second Streets, SE), the north lawn of the Jefferson Building provides a comfortable space for people to watch the feature films. Moviegoers are welcome to bring picnics.

Join us every Thursday starting Thursday, July 11 for awesome flicks from the National Film Registry.

The series is part of the Library's annual programming theme to explore America's changemakers. It kicks off with Walt Disney’s first live-action movie to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and ends with the first film in which computer-generated characters interacted with human actors on screen:

The Library of Congress and Washington Performing Arts’ Mars Urban Arts Initiative will co-host the first “Summer Concerts on the Lawn” outdoor musical performance series. The performances will be presented in conjunction with the "LOC Summer Movies on the Lawn" — a six-film series which showcases iconic films from the Library’s National Film Registry — on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm from July 11 through Aug. 15 on the north lawn of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, across the street from the U.S. Capitol. The film screenings will follow the musical performances at sundown.
