"Beauty and the Beast" (Walt Disney Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures, 1991) 84 min.
Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" is an animated, musical retelling of the fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince du Beaumont. The film follows Belle (voiced by Paige O'Hara), an intelligent and rebellious young French woman, who is forced to live with a hideous monster, the Beast (voiced by Robby Benson), after offering to take her father's place as the Beast's prisoner. Unaware that the Beast is actually an enchanted prince, Belle falls in love with him. "Beauty and the Beast" was the first animated film nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category. Alan Menken won an Oscar for his original score, and he and lyricist Howard Ashman (posthumously) earned Oscars for the film's theme song "Beauty and the Beast." "Beauty and the Beast" was added to the National Film Registry in 2002.
Located between the Supreme Court and the Jefferson Building, 10 First St., SE (running the length of East Capitol Street between First and Second Streets, SE), the north lawn of the Jefferson Building provides a comfortable space for people to watch the feature films. Moviegoers are welcome to bring picnics.
Join us every Thursday starting Thursday, July 11 for awesome flicks from the National Film Registry.
The series is part of the Library's annual programming theme to explore America's changemakers. It kicks off with Walt Disney’s first live-action movie to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and ends with the first film in which computer-generated characters interacted with human actors on screen:
