We are gratified that many educators (70) have signed up for the June 24-28 seminar. We have organized seminars for 14 years; this is the first time we have received so many applications months before the seminar begins. We have space for approximately 60 teachers. Originally, we stated that everyone should submit a refundable check of $50 by June 1. Since we continue to receive daily applications, we need to change our June l deadline for the check deposit and say that we need your check ASAP.

Last year, we also had a waiting list; however, ten people did not show up on the first day of the seminar and this meant that ten people who could have attended could not. It was too late to notify those on our waiting list that they could join us for the seminar week. We do not want this to happen again.

As a result, we encourage you to mail your refundable check to Sung Kim ASAP but no later than May 15 to guarantee a place for the seminar. We will not cash your checks, but return them after attending the seminar from June 24 through June 28. The June l date for deposits will no longer guarantee your enrollment in the seminar. It will now essentially be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Also, we will create a list by the date of one's application. If you have reserved your place in April with your refundable check and cannot attend, you must notify us by June 1. This way we will be able to give places to teachers on the waiting list and your $50 check will be mailed back to you. If you do not notify us by June 1, we will keep your check and use the funds to buy history and literature books on Korea to give to teachers who attend the seminar.

Register via "LOCAL" ticket type if you live in Los Angeles. Register via "FELLOWSHIP" ticket type if you reside 40 miles outside of Los Angeles, and would like for your hotel stay cost to be paid for. (Check in Sunday night before seminar; check out Saturday after seminar)

Local registration is due Jun 1 and Fellowship registration is due Mar 15.

Fellowship selections will be announced via email by Saturday, March 30.

    All seminar attendees will receive free of cost:

    - Breakfast and lunch on seminar days

    - Book Teaching East Asia: Korea (2018) by Mary Connor, which includes many teaching resources and lesson plans

    - A thumbdrive with PowerPoint files of Korean history and culture lectures, and related lessons

    - Lectures by university professors, K-12 educators, and administrators

    - Entry to various museums and a fieldtrip to the Friendship Bell by the Pacific Ocean

    - Eligibility to receive up to 2 LAUSD salary points or up to 6 USC Continuing Education Units (CEU will require payment of $135). More information on this, please visit

    Fellowship recipients will receive:

    - 6 nights of hotel stay during the duration of the seminar (hotel is designated by the seminar and will be located near the seminar venue. Fellows will be assigned to double occupancy rooms)

    - Van service from hotel to seminar venue before and after the seminar each day

    Fellowship does NOT include travel costs (e.g. airfare to LAX, taxi to and from airport to hotel)

    Fellowship recipients will be asked to share their seminar experience and present the book Teaching East Asia: Korea to their school administrators when they return to their schoolsite after the seminar.

    Fellowship selections will be made by March 30. We will send you your notice of acceptance by email. We are most interested in applicants who will make a serious commitment to learning not only about Korean history
    and culture, but will also have a long term commitment to inform Americans about Korea.

    The National Korean Studies Seminar (NKS) is a private, non-profit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to informing K-12 educators of all disciplines about Korea’s history and culture and the Korean American experience in order to promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation for the rich heritage and achievements of the Korean people. It is the only national organization created by experienced award-winning educators who have carried out more than 100 programs on Korea throughout the United States for over a decade.
