ATTN: Breeders - For this year’s meeting, each breeding program has the opportunity to submit hybrids to be included in two observational field trials that we will visit during Thursday’s tours. The first trial will be sponsored by Lipman Family Farms and will demonstrate hybrid performance under commercial production settings. The second trial will be a Tomato yellow leaf curl virus inoculated trial, conducted at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center. Further details are provided below for anyone interested in submitting entries for either/both of the trials. Please note that these trials will be sown very soon, and seed must be received by July 18th.

Breeders may submit up to 6 entries per trial, and entries need not be the same for both trials. Please send 100 seed per entry, packaged separately for each trial, and please indicate clearly on the envelope which trial the seed is intended for (e.g. “Grower” or “TY”). Due to resource limitations, only determinate varieties should be submitted. Entries may be for any fruit type (round, plum, small-fruited) and will be grouped in the field accordingly. Please email your list of entries and intended trials to Sam Hutton (sfhutton@ufl.edu), specifying the disease resistance package of each. Seed should be sent to:

Gulf Coast REC
Attn: Sam Hutton
15625 CR 672
Wimauma, FL 33598

Both the grower trial and the TYLCV trial will be planted to the field during the week of August 26th. Field conditions will likely be warm and rainy for the first few weeks after planting. For the grower trial, anticipated disease problems will include bacterial spot, target spot, Fusarium crown rot, Fusarium wilt race 3, and possibly some TYLCV. The GCREC TYLCV trial will be inoculated immediately prior to transplanting using viruliferous whitefly-mediated inoculation.
