DAY ONE: THE WORLD OF STORIES AND SYMBOLS - EMDR, SANDTRAY AND PLAY THERAPY - 6 hour workshop

This workshop will give you tools to work with:

  • Children that do not acknowledge or do not want to talk about the traumatic or adverse events
  • Children in the child protective system
  • Children living in unpredictable and chaotic environments
  • Children with parents that are not able to provide appropriate support
  • Children with attachment injuries and unmet attachment needs
  • Children that use avoidance as a mechanism of adaptation
  • Children that become dysregulated or dissociative when trauma memories are brought up or activated
  • Children that despite going through a lengthy stabilization phase cannot tolerate the accessing of traumatic material

This is an innovative training that presents an introduction to the EMDR- Sandtray protocol thatcan be used in play therapy settings developed by Ana Gomez with children and adolescents.

This protocol is especially useful for play therapists that work with children that present withdysregulation or constriction of the affective system and require greater distance from the traumatic material. In addition, play therapists can utilize this protocol with children that use anumber of mechanism of adaptation such as avoidance and present with trauma related phobias. The EMDR-Sandtray protocol can be used in play therapy settings to address and promote the integration of trauma memories. It also offers various levels of distance from the traumatic material: The actual memory of trauma where the self is present in the story, to the general story/world where the self is absent.

One of the wonderful assets of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol is its capacity to access implicit and right hemisphere material through the use of play therapy, stories, symbols and archetypes.

Objectives:

Clinicians will be able to:

1. Utilize case conceptualization skills and play therapy interventions to use with children and adolescents with complex clinical presentations that may require greater level of distance from the traumatic material.

2. Set up the various levels of distance offered by the EMDR-Sandtray protocol in play therapy settings.

3. Develop resources and play therapy interventions during preparation phase using the sand tray including:

○ Safe-calm-happy place

○ Helpers

○ Resource spots

○ The little self-healing place

4. Set up the assessment phase honoring the various levels of distance and using the concept of “staging” in play therapy settings.

5. Use play therapy interventions and interweaves within the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol, such as:

○ Interweaves directed to meet attachment needs

○ Interweaves directed to modulate arousal

6. Learn the installation phase and body scan using the EMDR-Sandtray protocol in play therapy settings.

DAY 2: WORKING WITH COMPLEX TRAUMA, ATTACHMENT WOUNDS, AND DISSOCIATION IN THE PLAY ROOM - 6 hour workshop

This presentation will focus on theoretical, practical and creative strategies for working with children with severe dysregulation of the affective system, emotional constriction and dissociative tendencies. A multifactorial model (Gomez, 2013) to organize the stabilization phase of treatment will be presented. Moreover, the TAPAS protocol will be addressed for children with significant developmental deficits and unmet needs. How to use, play therapy, mindfulness and EMDR therapy to increase affect tolerance, present awareness and increase emotional and somatic literacy will be covered. In addition, clinicians will learn advanced strategies to work with dissociative children in the play room and with trauma related phobias.

Participants attending this training will be able to:

1. Use elements of the multifactor model of stabilization and case conceptualization skills in the play therapy settings

2. Use effective resources and play therapy interventions for stabilization and affect regulation that are suitable for dissociative and highly dysregulated or emotionally constricted children.

3. Use advanced play therapy interventions to increase affect tolerance and acceptance

4. Utilize play therapy strategies to work with dissociative children and trauma related phobias

5. Utilize the TAPAS protocol to meet unmet needs in children with significant histories of neglect in play therapy settings.

6. Utilize play therapy strategies to keep children within manageable levels of arousal and maximize the child’s integrative capacities.
