7th Annual Hines VA Community Mental Health Summit

Join us! Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital and the Brookfield Zoo look forward to seeing you at the 2019 Hines VA Community Mental Health Summit. This year the summit will focus on common experiences of a Veterans' mental health journey and the pivotal moments where support from VA and community organizations may significantly impact the Veteran experience - Moments That Matter.

The Community Mental Health Summit aims to engage our community, strengthen partnerships, and share resources to better serve Veterans and their families. The Summit will offer Speaker & Interactive presentations, Networking & Resource Fair, and a special opportunity to interact with the zoo animals.

After the Summit, Brookfield Zoo invites attendees to Stay & Enjoy the Summer Nights Concert, a Jimmy Buffett Tribute featuring Mr. Myers at 7pm and fireworks at 9pm. We welcome Veterans, Service members, military families, DoD partners, representatives of community groups and the Veteran Friendly Community!

Programming 1pm - 6pm.

Summit Topics of Discussion include:

  • Keynote Speaker. Mr. Rich Meegan, a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran & Hines Whole Health Volunteer, shares his Moments That Matter journey.

  • VA MISSION Act of 2018. Your Care is our Mission. Informational session on VA MISSION Act presented by Hines VA Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr. Jeffrey Oken.

  • Suicide Prevention (SP). Hines Psychologist, Dr. Megan Mayberry presents on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for SP. Lead SP Coordinator, Anita Carmona Caravelli LCSW, provides an overview of SP at Hines and will introduce Mike Vinopal from Hope for the Day (HFTD) who will talk how their mission led to a partnership between Hines SP & Sip of Hope Coffee Bar to raise awareness of the Veterans Crisis Line.

  • Food & Mood. The Hines CHEF team explores the relationship between what we eat and how we feel.

  • Horticultural Therapy. Hines Caregiver Support in partnership with the Kay Knight from the Chicago
    Botanic Garden provide an opportunity to reduce stress while learning about the therapeutic benefits of
    gardening and plant-based activities.

  • Animal Ambassadors. Get up-close and personal with some of Brookfield Zoo's amazing animals.

Free Admission & Free Parking:

  • Summit attendees will receive Free Admission to the Brookfield Zoo & Summer Nights Concert

  • Free Parking at the Discovery Center Lot (South Gate Entrance, Intersection of Golf / Ridgewood Roads

Need a Ride?

The Veterans Mental Health Consumer Council will offer a ROUNDTRIP shuttle from Hines to the Summit, free of charge, to Veterans, Caregivers & families, Hines staff, and community members.

  • 12:00pm Check-in at the Hines VA Winter Garden (located between buildings 12 & 13)
  • 12:20pm Departure to Brookfield Zoo
  • 6:00pm Return to Hines VA
  • Shuttle Reservations or Inquiries, leave a message for the council at 708-202-8387 ext. 21021 and a member will return your call.
  • Reservations accepted through July 19, 2019
  • Shuttles are wheelchair accessible, but with limited seating - please inform the council when reserving your spot.
  • ***The shuttle will not make additional trips. Please make other return arrangements if staying to enjoy the zoo and Summer Nights Concert after the summit. Thank you.***

RSVP & Resource Fair:

  • Community organizations who would like to reserve Resource Fair booth space should register at eventbrite no later than July 24, 2019. **Please indicate you are requesting space at the Resource Fair and include the organization name, address, and phone.

  • Resource Fair setup begins at 12pm. Arrive Early. Booth location is First Come, First Serve.

  • Programming 1pm - 6pm.

  • RSVP required for Resource Fair vendors. All other attendees encouraged, not required.
