Event description
iD 8 Hackathon at Southern Miss April 12-13

About this Event

The University of Southern Mississippi and Craig Newmark Philanthropies host a Hackathon for young women in technology Friday and Saturday April 12-13 in Hattiesburg.

The Hackathon competition is open to teams of four high school girls. Teams will learn to code, build, and present a mobile app.

No coding experience is necessary.

If teams want to prepare before the event they can explore and work in AppLab.

You'll get to enjoy state of the art facilities on the university main campus in Hattiesburg, eat at the Fresh and catered meals, interact with undergraduate and graduate students.

The event will also feature speakers ...

  1. USM President Rodney D. Bennett
  2. Ms. Sheena Allen Founder and CEO of CapWay,
  3. Ms. Juanita Ward former Professional WNBA Basketball Player and Founder of Hope Dreams 4 Life.

Also look forward to Southern Miss swag and book giveaways!

Regional judges will select a winning app design team to bring a trophy home to their school and a cash prize for the winning team.

Student teams need to provide their own transportation to and from the USM Hattiesburg campus. For those needing overnight accommodation we have reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Hattiesburg for $95/night for two queen beds. Please contact them and reserve with the code "Hackathon."

Mentor teachers or parents are encouraged to attend, one per team. And all parents are invited to the presentation, judging, and awards luncheon Saturday at noon.
