Description

The 2019 Great Lakes Areas of Concern conference is being held September 11-12, 2019 at Windows on the River, located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. It is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, in partnership with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Conference registration is being managed by the Great Lakes Commission. The 2019 Great Lakes Areas of Concern Conference registration fee is $95 (USD). This covers all conference materials and on-site meals during the conference. Advanced registration is required; the registration deadline is Friday, September 6 at 5:00 pm ET.

Optional Events and Activities:

  1. Walking Tour of the Cuyahoga River Area of Concern (no charge)
    Tuesday, Sept. 10, 3:00-5:00 p.m., meet in the lobby of Windows on the River.

    The tour will depart and return at Windows on the River. There will be 4-5 stops along the lower Cuyahoga River where local experts will review cleanup and restoration efforts that are contributing to its path toward delisting. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes.

  2. Tour of the U.S. EPA Research Vessel Lake Guardian (no charge)
    Tuesday, Sept. 10, on the Cuyahoga River near Windows on the River. Tours will be provided at 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6:00 pm and will last approximately one hour. There is a limit of 25 people per tour.

    The Lake Guardian is the largest research vessel in the U.S. EPA fleet and the largest research vessel operating on the Great Lakes. It is owned by EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office and conducts monitoring and sampling on all five Great Lakes each year to report on the status and trends of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The crew and scientists will provide a tour of the vessel and demonstrate its state-of-the-art laboratories and monitoring and analysis capabilities.

  3. Pre-Conference Dinner and Tour of the Greater Cleveland Aquarium ($35)
    Tuesday, Sept. 10, 5:30-9:00 pm, Windows on the River (aquarium tour, 5:30-7:30 pm; dinner, 6:30-8:30 pm; cash bar on the banks of the Cuyahoga
    River, 5:30-9:00 pm).

    Join us for an opening dinner on the banks of the Cuyahoga River and an opportunity to visit the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, which features over 70,000 square feet of aquarium exhibits including a 175-foot walk-through sea tunnel. Attendees are encouraged to check in for the AOC conference at this time.

  4. Lake Erie and Cuyahoga River Dinner Cruise ($35)
    Wednesday, Sept. 11, 6:30-9:00 pm, following the first day of the conference and poster session.

    Join us for an evening cruise on Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. A full dinner will be provided along with a cash bar. Local leaders will narrate key sites along the way, including the site of the famous 1969 Cuyahoga River fire. The dinner cruise will depart and return from adjacent to Windows on the River, with boarding at 6:30 pm, departure at 7:00 pm, and return at 9:00 pm. Sponsored by the Great Lakes Commission and partners from the Great Lakes consulting community.

  5. Poster Session on Area of Concern work (no charge) - SOLD OUT

    Interested individuals or organizations are invited to submit a poster showcasing relevant AOC work in the Great Lakes basin. The poster session will be held following the first day of the conference from 5-6:30 pm at Windows on the River. Poster abstracts are due by Friday, August 2, and those invited to present a poster will be notified no later than Friday, August 23. See the main conference website for additional details.   6. Display Table (no charge) - SOLD OUT

    Display tables are limited and will be provided on a first-come basis. If you are interested in a display table, please select "Display Table" from the list of registration options.
