Event description

Description

GEAR UP U 2019 will be held at West Virginia State University in Institute, WV, from Tuesday, June 25 through Saturday, June 29, 2019. If you are selected to serve as a GUU camp counselor, you will also be required to attend a staff training workshop on Monday, June 24, 2019. Nearly 200 rising seniors from West Virginia GEAR UP high schools will participate in this five-day, four-night on-campus college experience.

West Virginia GEAR UP will hire camp counselors to serve at GEAR UP U. As a camp counselor, you will be responsible for the following actions:

Staff Support – Counselors will assist with the implementation of the camp schedule and supervise their group of campers (approximately ten students) to ensure that students adhere to the GEAR UP U Code of Conduct and benefit from GEAR UP U.

Academic & Personal Support – Counselors must encourage students to remain in school and achieve the standards necessary to enroll in postsecondary education. The majority of this aspect will be demonstrated in the nightly “mentoring” sessions facilitated by the camp counselors. A mentoring curriculum and talking points will be provided to guide those discussions. Additionally, since students are rising seniors, counselors will be required to ensure that their students are well versed in certain "college knowledge" facts which will also be provided.

Goal Development and Encouragement – Counselors must help students to set goals for themselves and plan steps to realize those goals, and—ultimately—their dreams.

Friendship and Guidance – Counselors must listen and show an interest in students— especially those who might not otherwise receive much attention or support.

Accountability and Positive Examples – Counselors must serve as a reliable resource for students and be honest, trustworthy and dependable. Counselors should also encourage students to adhere to positive values, which you should exemplify yourself in the process.

If you are interested, complete this application no later than February 15, 2019. Applying to be a camp counselor at GEAR UP U is a competitive and professional work-based experience. The application process will consist of reviewing applications, contacting references, interviewing with the camp director, and passing a personal background check.

If you have questions about GEAR UP U or the camp counselor position, please contact Jason Luyster at jason.luyster@wvhepc.edu.
