Family & Youth Casting Call 2019

A Free Fishing Event with Angling Instruction for Youth

Learn how to fish and discover the value of aquatic resources at the 2019 Family & Youth Casting Call on Saturday, June 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. taking place along the banks of the Anacostia River in Anacostia Park, just outside of the Aquatic Resources Education Center!

The Family & Youth Casting Call is an annual free event sponsored by the Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) Fisheries & Wildlife Division. DOEE provides fishing instruction, environmental education activities, and community resources to youth and their families. Families can bring their own fishing equipment or youth may use the spin casting equipment provided by DOEE. DOEE also supplies bait and organizes volunteer fishing instructors to help youth participants learn the basics of catch-and-release fishing in a fun, supportive setting.

Sign up to reserve a single one hour fishing slot, equipment, and instruction for youth participant and please note the following:

  1. Acquire a ticket for each family member planning to attend so that we may maintain an accurate headcount.

  2. Youth participants must be accompanied by an adult chaperone to assist with supervision and practicing of angling skills. This includes all minors, 17 and below.

  3. Submit only 1 registration per family/email address, but encourage other interested families to register!

Please note that participants and attendees assume all risks associated with the event and its activities.

The Family & Youth Casting Call is one of many environmental education opportunities at the Aquatic Resources Education Center (AREC). All AREC programs are FREE, but space is limited. View other programs and learn more about the Aquatic Resources Education Center by visiting The Aquatic Resources Education Center is located in Anacostia Park next to the Skating Pavilion.

Questions may be directed to or 202-535-2276.

  1. Where is this located and is there parking?
The Family & Youth Casting Call event is taking place outside of the Aquatic Resources Education Center (AREC). The AREC is in Anacostia Park, located at 1900 Anacostia Drive SE, Washington DC 20020. Please note that this address is for the entirety of the 2+ mile park and the AREC is located at the north end in Section E, next to the Skating Pavilion and DC Urban Treehouse and at the opposite end from the Anacostia Recreation Center and Park Police Headquarters.

Please use caution when relying solely on GPS, as you may be routed to the wrong end of the park (or even Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens!). We suggest using Google Maps to navigate to the ‘Aquatic Resources Education Center’.

On-site parking is free and plentiful.

Those relying on public transportation should note the extended distance to/from stops and budget their time accordingly.

  2. Is there a minimum or maximum age for FYCC?
Activities are geared towards family participation but equipment and introductory angling instruction are limited to youth.

Participating children will need to be able to follow instructions on how to properly hold a rod, bait a hook, cast, and reel in line. Parents/older family members are asked to allow youth to use the DOEE fishing equipment and help provide guidance since there is a limited amount available and young, novice anglers need the practice.

Note: All program participants must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

  3. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, you do not. We will check you in using the first and last name of the person representing your family (i.e., the contact information entered into Eventbrite).

  4. What if I am running late for my reservation?
You may fish any time during that hour slot. If you need to change your time slot reservation, you may inquire with the staff at the registration table.

Note: You will only be able to fish during a later slot if there are spaces available.

  5. What if I can no longer attend or need to change my reservations? How can I contact the organizer with questions?
Log into Eventbrite, or email the DOEE AREC Education Staff at

Read responses to more Frequently Asked Questions or contact the DOEE AREC Education Staff at as needed.
