Breakout Sessions:

Park tour/Invsasive Plant Managemnent Plan -- Susan Mason & Kelli Whitney (Broward County Parks) Objective: Identify current invasive plant management issues at Long Key, along with past and current management strategies. Continue the session with a one-hour site tour led by Kelli Whitney, Park Manager, to expand on the invasive species discussion. Her tour will focus on site history and how it plays a role in the current state of non-native/invasive species’ populations at the park. The group will convene back indoors after the tour to formulate a comprehensive invasive plant management plan for the site with Susan Mason, Senior Natural Resources Specialist.

Discuss uses of genetic technology topics -- Maggie Hunter -- classroom Objective: Discuss uses of genetic technology for the detection, monitoring, management and control of invasive species in the Greater Everglades. Participants will receive an overview of technologies, participate in a Q&A session, and brainstorm priority applications and research.

Plant workday -- Ryan Brown (SFWMD) Objective: Brainstorm potential invasive plant management cooperative work projects for ECISMA in 2018-2019 then develop an action plan to implement most promising projects. Emphasis will be on rapid response projects and projects benefiting multiple partners.

Afternoon, 1:30 -- 3:45

Python Patrol -- Robert Edman (FWC) Objective: Train participants on how to safely capture large constrictor snakes. There will be a presentation covering basic biology and the invasion ecology of Burmese pythons followed by a hands-on safe capture.

Fish -- Kelly Gestring (FWC) Objective: Discuss and select potential sampling sites for November 2019 Fish Slam; select potential venues for November 2019 Fish Chat, and discuss possible ECISMA Nonnative Fish Round Up in November 2019.

Caiman -- Bryan Falk (NPS) Objective: Discuss what we know about caiman in southeastern Florida, including impacts, history, and recent observations. Evaluate potential management options and outcomes.

Plant ID -- Jimmy Lange and Courtney Angelo (Broward County Parks) -- classroom Objective: Train ECISMA biologists in identification of regional Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) plants through examination of both living and herbarium specimens of EDRR species and potential lookalikes with supplemental photographs. We will use the recent ECISMA EDRR plant identification booklet as a guide. We will also go over basic protocols for collection and preparation of plant voucher specimens, an important tool for documenting plant invasions.
