Event description

Description

Coinciding with Americans for the Arts' annual Arts Advocacy Day, EALS at AU presents the 12th Annual Emerging Arts Leaders Symposium on March 3 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Our 2019 theme Coming UP: Innovation, Evolution, and Progress in the Arts is an exploration of the artists and arts managers who believe that we must make change to affect change. Art is a powerful vehicle for good, but its positive impacts are often undercut by real-world adversities perpetuated within art institutions. Join us for a conversation about how we can challenge norms, break down barriers, and invest in the future.

We're excited to have accomplished arts leader and Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Melissa Chiu, join us as the #EALS2019 keynote speaker!

EALS is a full day of exciting panel discussions, workshops, and networking oppurtunities with arts leaders from the DC community and beyond. Following the Symposium, attendees are invited to stay for the official Emerging Leaders Reception for Arts Advocacy Day from 5 - 6 p.m.

The Emerging Arts Leaders Symposium (EALS) is an annual gathering of some of the brightest minds in the arts field. Organized each year by graduate students of AU’s Arts Management Program, the Symposium is a dynamic day of conversation and inspiration among seasoned professionals and the next generation of arts leaders.

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Free parking is available for Symposium attendees in the Katzen Arts Center garage. The Katzen Arts Center is metro accessible with the closest stop at Tenleytown on the Red Line. Free AU shuttle buses run from the Metro to Katzen regularly.

Should I purchase the additional boxed lunch or are there other options near Katzen Arts Center?

We highly recommend either purchasing the add-on boxed lunch (supplied by Cosi) or bringing a lunch so you will be able to enjoy the full Symposium experience by attending our lunchtime workshops or optional resume reviews. Many of the on-campus restuarants may have limited hours due to American University's spring break, however, Katzen Arts Center is about a mile away from Tenleytown.

Do I need to sign up for workshops or sessions in advance?

No, you will be able to sign up for all sessions and workshops when you arrive at the Symposium.
