Event description

Description

Many people are surprised to discover that Michigan is the home of (a limited amount of) buried treasure. For centuries, gold, silver, copper and diamonds have been found here. Records available at the US Forest Service in Cadillac indicate that gold has been found in over 100 places in Michigan. Gold has been discovered in 27 of 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula and 6 of 15 counties in the UP.

Make no mistake, finding gold was also one of the objectives of the earliest European explorers, but the native Indians knew nothing of the yellow metal. Small amounts of gold were eventually found as early as 1845, but it was not until the opening of the Ropes Gold Mine in the early 1880's that gold mining jumped into Michigan’s history. The Ropes mine ran for 14 years and produced $645,792 in gold and silver but was never able to pay a dividend to its stockholders.

This outing will be at the LDMA Athens Camp in Michigan. It is open to anyone that wants to come play in the dirt and find their gold. Participants must register by calling GPAA headquarters at 1-800-551-9707 no later than 05/09/19.

What is a “Common Dig Dirt Party Outing?”
Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA), in association with the Lost Dutchman’s Mining Association (LDMA), hosts a National Gold Mining Common Dig “Dirt Party” where all participants will be working for their gold split at the end of the outing. All gold recovered during the operation is split between the participants. All participants will receive a vial with a picker or two in it as well as a PayDirt bag that has their split of the gold recovered.

It is more than just Gold Diggin Dirt Party. . . .
You will meet people from all over the country, that want to learn more about how to become a better gold prospector. People are there to help you find more gold, both hands on training and a “classroom” setting. Some subjects include: Basic prospecting, geology, panning, GPS, detecting, etc. There are also daily fun activities that help benefit the camps.

We encourage you to invite friends and family to join you at the outing; however, only paid participants can be a part of outing activities, i.e. classes, seminars, hands-on training, etc. This is a great opportunity to get new people involved in prospecting for gold. This is a great escape to learn and have a good time.
