About Woodside

The house now known as Woodside was completed in 1929 for the publisher of the Brooklyn Daily Times and the Brooklyn Times-Union, Fremont C. Peck and his wife, Isabel Foster. It was conceived as an L-shaped French Chateau, incorporating bold naturalistic finishes, strong connectivity to the landscape, and an exuberant wrought-iron spiral staircase located within a tower adjacent to the main entrance. Benjamin Wistar Morris (initially with the firm of Carrère and Hastings) was the architect who also designed the Union League and Harmonie clubs in New York City as well as the interiors of the Queen Mary. The estate’s landscape was originally designed by Armistead Fitzhugh, author of Camouflage: Adaptation of Basic Principles of Landscape Architecture. In 2008, the firm of Ferguson & Shamamian Architects was hired to restore and adapt the house for modern living.
