Greetings!

It's never too early to plan for life after high school. So will you choose a 4-year college or a 2-year college? Or is technical school a better fit? Are you preparing today with the right classes? Do you know how you will pay for your education? Do you know the best sources for scholarships or other financial aid?

Get these questions and MORE answered at 2019 College Prep 101!

Hosted by the Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter (ASAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority , Inc. and Higher Aspirations Foundation, Inc., in collaboration with the Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance, College Prep101 is a FREE community event is designed to provide a one-stop shop for students and parents/guardians.

We invite you to review the workshop descriptions below to help you select the sessions of greatest interest.

Registration (and continental breakfast) will begin promptly at 8:00 AM and the program begins at 9:00 AM. Free parking available on the campus of Perry Career Academy.

Workshop Descriptions

College is More than Books

Want your college experience to mean more than just books, classes and facts? Learn how our different mentorship & scholarship programs, community service, quality relationships and using your own individuality can help prepare you for your college experience.

College Access

This session will walk students through the application process. Students will need to bring test scores and high school information. Seniors at the program who are ready to apply, may be given the application fee based on the number of sponsors and money raised.

Dual Enrollment vs. Advanced Placement Courses

What is Dual Enrollment? How Advanced Placement courses can “make or break” your acceptance into college? In this session students/parents will be informed of the pros and cons of dual enrollment and advanced placement courses.

Empty Nesters (Parents/Guardians-only session)

This session focuses on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) for empty nesters, offering relevant dialogue and strategies for embracing and enhancing the parent-student journey to college.

Financial Preparedness for Your Future

This session offers financial “nuggets,” discuss the importance of money management that plant the seeds of financial success for parents and students as they prepare for college.

Gap Year: A Year of Exploration & Planning

Do you feel like there’s something you want/need to do before you go to college? What about earning extra income for the expense of college, studying abroad or taking a year to focus on something meaningful? This session shows a wide variety of options available to let you explore life outside the usual classroom setting before formalizing your studies at a college.

Internships and Co-Ops

This session will provide information on getting the experience needed while in college. Students will learn how these paid and unpaid positions can open the door to exciting employment opportunities after college.

Majors and Careers–A New Millennium

Participants in this session will face head-on the enormous question “What am I going to do with my life?” The fears and anxieties that this question raises and the exploration of exciting possibilities in majors and careers new to this millennium, as well as those established careers that the participants may not have considered. This session will suggest new ideas, new ways to think about what a major is, and how a major helps move a student into a career.

Money/Money/Money

Need help figuring out the financial aid maze? Looking for some tips to help with searching for scholarships, understanding what various loans entail or navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? This session is for you.

NCAA: Clearinghouse and Requirements

This session focuses on the "Do's and Don'ts", eligibility and special requirements of the NCAA for student athletes.

Real Talk: Young Women

Sorry parents, this session is FOR FEMALE STUDENTS ONLY! What’s really on your mind about college life and becoming a college student? Bring your tough questions to a panel of college students and admission representatives before you make the leap to college. We’ll give you some great info about college life, but this track is about getting real about your questions.

Bring your tough questions to a panel of college students and admission representatives before you make the leap to college. We’ll give you some great info about college life, but this track is about getting real about your questions.

Reality Check (This workshop is sponsored by our partner, Regions Bank)

The activity examines important budgeting terms including gross pay, net pay and budgeting. Each participant will receive a life scenario for the activity that includes occupation, salary and family status. They must then create their budget category limits and visit various stations to make spending decisions for housing, transportation, savings, random life events, utilities, cell phones and subscriptions.

What’s Your College Fit?

This session will provide insights about the value and potential benefits in attending four year, two year or trade schools.
