2019 Children's I/DD Mental Health Summit: Building Quality Care

About this Event

Our goal is to effect change on Children’s I/DD and Mental Health collaborations by blending systems via cross-training, communication and relationship building.

We want an event that is deeper and more connected than a typical convention. We coordinate panels, breakout groups, workshops and other sessions that inspire, nourish, and foster collaborative communication amongst all presenters and attendees.

1:45 – 4:00 Tool Kit Sessions:

Session 1: Special Education 101: Supporting Families Navigating Special Education Services

-The Individualized Education Program describes how children receive special education services in school. Learn special education basics including; eligibility, timelines, and the IEP development. Discover ways to support students and families as they navigate challenging behavior, Functional Behavior Assessments, and Behavior Support Plans at school. Identify strategies for assisting families as they navigate special education services.

Session 2: Brief Suicide Assessment and Safety Planning

-This presentation will focus on risks and signs of suicidal crisis, as well as statistics specific to Oregon and the IDD/Mental Health population. We will provide hands-on tools and strategies for suicide assessment and safety planning, targeted specifically to non-clinicians who encounter suicide risk in this population.

Session 3: Standards of Quality for Family Support

-This will be an overview of the National Standards of Quality for Family Support and Strengthening including how the Standards were developed, the application across child, youth and family serving systems and how systems in Oregon are using the Standards to align language, build protective factors and assess programs for quality.

Session 4: Best Practices in Supporting Monolingual (Spanish) and Bilingual (Spanish/English) Families Navigating Development Disabilities and Mental Health

-This presentation will discuss best practices to enhance engagement of monolingual Spanish speaking families and bilingual Spanish-English speaking families while navigating both developmental disabilities and mental health services. This presentation will be delivered by bilingual and bicultural family members with lived experience navigating these systems.

Session 5: Mental Health Approaches to Intellectual/Developmental Disability

- This presentation will focus on approaches to appropriately support the mental well-being of individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disability. We will provide tips strategies for recognizing and supporting mental health symptoms in this population.

Session 6: Wraparound for Children Experiencing Intellectual/Developmental Disability

- This presentation will focus on collaboration between Wraparound (intensive care planning process) and I/DD services. We will provide strategies for supporting the child and family as well as navigating strategies, supports and services.
