Providing Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS): A Strategy to Improve Quality, Reduce Health Disparities and Achieve Health Equity for Diverse Patient Populations

As the U.S. becomes increasingly diverse, healthcare organizations struggle to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate, health literate care that takes into account patients’ cultural health beliefs, preferred languages, and communication needs. The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that the United States will become a majority-minority population sometime between 2042 and 2050 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). More than 57 million people speak a language other than English at home and over 25 million speak English less than “very well.” Only 12% of adults have average health literacy meaning that 9 out of 10 adults lack the basic skills to manage their own health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health and Health Care provide a framework for delivering culturally and linguistically appropriate services to advance health equity, improve quality, and help eliminate health care disparities.
