The Program:

Tips for Optimizing Structural Masonry

Presented by Scott Conwell, FAIA, FCSI

The focus of the seminar is to give participants a clearer understanding of the interrelationship in masonry buildings between materials, architecture, engineering and construction. Seemingly simple decisions can dramatically affect the building and understanding options available in materials, design and construction methods can result in more efficient and cost effective structures. Taught using a “Tips” format, the seminar will highlight areas where proper understanding of masonry - from architectural and engineering design to materials to construction methods - can result in better completed buildings. The seminar addresses ASTM standards for concrete masonry units, mortar and grout. It also addresses grout testing and methods of grout placement, as well as reinforcement of masonry.

Hands-on Masonry Construction

Led by John Lux, BAC Local 6, Bricklaying Apprentice Instructor

Try your hand at mixing mortar, spreading mortar, laying stretchers and headers, and striking joints. You won’t be an expert bricklayer by the time you leave, but you will learn some of the complexities and nuances of the craft, and develop an appreciation for the skilled craft of bricklaying. Be sure to wear your work clothes and boots.

Masonry Movement Joints

Presented by Jeff Diqui, International Masonry Institute

The national model masonry code requires building designers to “indicate type and location of movement joints on the project drawings.” Additionally, the veneer section of the code requires building designers to “design and detail the veneer to accommodate differential movement.” This seminar will teach you how to locate movement joints to accommodate or restrain building and material movement to avoid cracks or system failures. You will learn about control and expansion joints at corners, shelf angles, top-of-wall bond beams, loose & fixed lintels, cement-based veneers, loadbearing CMU walls, stair towers, and adhered veneers. You will also learn how to select proper sealant color.
