Creating the Schools Our Children Need

Featured Researcher - Dylan Wiliam, Ph.D.

Consortium Keynote 9:00 - 11:30

Formative Assessment

There is now a large and growing evidence base that helping teachers develop their use of minute-to-minute and day-by-day assessment is one of, if not the most powerful ways to improve student learning. However, adopting formative assessment, or assessment for learning as it is sometimes called, involves far more than adding a few “quick fixes” to teachers’ classroom repertoires. It involves a fundamental shift in focus, from what the teacher is putting into the process to what the students are getting out of it. Learn practical techniques for implementing formative assessment.

Lunch and Workshop 11:30 – 2:30

Key Issues in School Improvement

Effective school improvement requires more than just focusing on 'what works'. We need to take into account the feasibility and the cost effectiveness of potential reforms. In addition to formative assessment, the three most powerful levers for school improvement are curriculum development, assessment literacy, and leadership that supports teachers in making changes to their classroom practice. Learn how these three important issues can impact school improvement.

NOTE: A separate ticket is required for admittance to the lunch and afternoon workshop.
