ABOUT CGS:

"Parents, catechists, religious educators, clergy, and other interested adults are drawn to the very rich, retreat-like courses in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Through formation courses in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, adults have the opportunity to see all age appropriate presentations and materials given to children from the Bible and liturgy. Each formation course focuses on a specific developmental age group of the child.

A Level I formation course prepares adults working with children ages three to six years old. A Level II formation course prepares adults working with children ages six to nine years old, and a Level III formation course prepares adults working with children ages nine to twelve years old. The foundation for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is in the Level I formation course as it is this course that a catechist becomes attuned to the religious life of the child.

Each formation course includes preparations in giving the presentations (the lessons) to children, provides a solid background in the theological and pedagogical underpinnings of this work, assists the catechist in preparing his/her album, introduces the prepared environment, the atrium, and guides catechists in making the handmade materials used for the children’s work." ~From www.cgsusa.org

90+ HOUR FORMATION COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To present the methodology and guiding principles of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for the 3 to 6-year-old child.
  • To explore the religious nature and the most vital religious needs of the 3 to 6-year-old child.
  • To meditate on the Biblical and Liturgical themes presented to the 3 to 6-year-old child.
  • To broaden your ability to observe and learn from the child, to listen to the Scriptures with the child, to deepen your own enjoyment of God.
  • To offer guidelines and assistance in preparing the 3-6 Atrium environment, and in making the catechist’s album and catechetical materials.
  • 80% attendance is required for certification. In addition, 45 hours of observation in a Montessori and Atrium environment is highly encouraged.

FORMATION TEAM:

Mandie DeVries began her journey with CGS in 2004, and served for 13 years first as a catechist and then Director of Religious Education at All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa where 43 trained catechists and 27 other volunteers served 200+ children ages 0-12 each week using Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. She and her husband Matt, who is also a trained CGS catechist, homeschool their 6 children. She is trained in all three levels of CGS, as well as receiving certification in Seminal Infant Toddler Formation in March of 2018, and is currently pursuing her Masters in Theology from St. Meinrad in southern Indiana. She strives each day to turn and become like a little child, so as to enter the Kingdom (cf Matt 18:3). In her blogs "Family Fiat", "Faith Formation Begins at Home", and "Forever In Formation" she writes of the adventures in CGS and her family. In September 2015, she was recognized as a CGS Level I Formation Leader by the National Association of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Mandie has been coming to Conception Abbey for 20 years and is thrilled to offer this course here!

Maureen Stone fell in love with Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 2003 when she attended the first Level I course held in Iowa. Maureen has been trained in all three levels of the Catechesis and serves as a coordinator of CGS at her parish, St. Thomas Aquinas in Indianola, Iowa. Her husband, Kelly, will be ordained to the permanent diaconate in August of this year. Maureen is so excited to assist with this course at one of her favorite places in the world!

Lynn Marsh came to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd after being invited to help with a materials making workshop and never left. She experiences the whole world as an atrium and brings her contemplative spirit to her work with the children. A gifted artist and teacher, Lynn makes building an atrium a prayerful and creative experience for course participants. Her wood-burned cenacle sets are now available for purchase at cgsusa.org!
