Event description

Description

Beekeeping is an art that is informed by a sound knowledge of honey bee biology and behavior.

This course is designed for those who have been keeping bees for at least a year. This course will include both classroom lectures and apiary demonstrations. The overall goal of this course is to enhance your knowledge so that you are better equipped to manage your bees. The course will meet the first Thursday of most months beginning in March through October.

The course will be divided into 3 parts; late winter/early spring, early summer and later summer/fall.

In the late winter and early spring the big challenge is to keep your bees alive by ensuring sufficient food to allow population growth and to prevent starvation. In April the challenge becomes management of your honey bee colony’s swarming impulse, so the course will discuss swarm prevention and control. Use of a nuc to help manage swarming will also be discussed.

Later in the season, our focus changes to honey production. Topics to be presented will important nectar plants, the honey bee dance language, how bees process nectar into honey and the composition and medicinal value of honey.

In the summer, controlling Varroa mite levels is imperative. Various control procedures will be discussed. Several procedures will be demonstrated including breaking of the brood cycle. The summer session will be held on Saturday, June 28.

In the late summer, after your honey is harvested, the main concern is preparing your colonies to survive the winter and thus, the late summer sessions will discuss how to manage your colonies to help them prepare for winter. Winter survival is increased if your colonies have low level of mites, are disease free and headed by a young vigorous queen. Thus, this diseases and Varroa control will be discussed. Furthermore, the goal is to have lots of young bees heading into winter. Queen performance will be evaluated and replacement will be discussed and demonstrated. Furthermore, stimulatory feeding to increase colony population will be discussed and demonstrated. In addition to the other factors already mentioned, a colony needs 60 to 80 pounds of stores to survive the winter. Feeding to increase winter stores will be discussed.

Varroa mites are a serious threat to the well being of honey bees. Varroa control and treatment will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the course.
