In this, AustinUP's third annual Aging & Innovation Summit, we will explore themes of equity, diversity and intergenerational community engagement with a goal of expanding aging innovation in Austin. We welcome entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, city leaders, business leaders, nonprofits, older adults, caregivers and individuals interested in the aging conversation.

This year, thanks to a wonderful new venue in the Junior League of Austin's new headquarters, we'll have room for afternoon breakout sessions and tracks for innovators, business leaders and consumers (older adults).

Jewel MullenOur keynote speaker is Jewel Mullen, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A. She is the associate dean for health equity at Dell Medical School, as well as an associate professor in the school’s population health and internal medicine departments. She also serves as Director of Health Equity at Ascension Seton to help meet health equity goals across its system.

Mullen is an internist, epidemiologist, public health leader, and the former principal deputy assistant secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Prior to her time at HHS, Mullen served for five years as commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health. Her career has spanned clinical, research, teaching and administrative roles focused on improving the health of all people, especially those who are underserved. She is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in building effective community-based chronic disease prevention programs and for her commitment to improving individual and population health by strengthening coordination between community, public health and health care systems.

During her tenure as Connecticut’s public health commissioner, Mullen served as president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and launched Living Longer Better, a national call to action promoting the health of older adults and their communities. She also has been a member of the Alzheimer’s Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Leadership Committee for the Healthy Brain Initiative.

Her presentation, titled, "Assuring Optimal Health for All Older Adults in Austin," will kick off our event.
