Event description
The 2019 Arlington County Fair is proud to announce a Robotics Competition in partnership with Arlington Public Schools and NOVA Systemics!

About this Event

Welcome to the Arlington County Fair Robotics Skills Challenge. The event will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 2:00PM to 6:00PM. The top 3 scoring teams will be given fair ribbons. Please register your team, review the rules, preview the VEX Tower Takeover and submit your registation fee to sign up.

This year's VEX Robotics Challenge game is Tower Takeover. At the fair, teams will have the opportunity to run driver and programming skills challenge matches. A team's highest driver and highest programming skills scores will be added together to give them an overall Robot Skills score. Please refer to the specific Robot Skills Challenge format at https://content.vexrobotics.com/docs/vrc-tower-takeover/AppendixB.pdf

Please also watch this video explaining the challenge: https://youtu.be/_JVQOiw_OUU

Teams will check-in and must get inspected. Teams will not be allowed to compete until they have passed inspection.

For teams using the Cortex hardware, visit https://www.roboticseducation.org/documents/2019/05/robot-inspection-checklist-cortex-2019-2020.pdf

For teams using the V5 hardware, visit https://www.roboticseducation.org/documents/2019/05/robot-inspection-checklist-v5-2019-2020.pdf

Teams should review and reference the linked inspection checklists before arriving to make the official process easier. You do not need to print inspection sheets. These will be provided and completed at the event.

A team must have at least 2 members. There is no maximum number of members.

Teams will use the VEX EDR system. Robots may be built ONLY using official VEX EDR components. Visit www.vexrobotics.com for more information.

At the beginning of any Match, Robots must be smaller than 18” (457.2 mm) long by 18” (457.2 mm) wide by 18” (457.2 mm) tall. Robots may expand beyond their starting size constraints after the start of a Match. Any restraints used to maintain starting size (i.e. zip ties, rubber bands, etc.) MUST remain attached to the Robot for the duration of the Match.

Teams will bring their own robot, controller, and parts to compete with. Teams will be given space to work on their robots, charge batteries, etc. in between challenge attempts. No additional parts or materials will be provided for teams to use.

VRC is a student-centered program. Adults may assist Students in urgent situations, but adults should never work on or program a Robot without Students on that Team being present and actively participating. Students should be prepared to demonstrate an active understanding of their Robot’s construction and programming to judges or event staff. Some amount of adult mentorship, teaching, and/or guidance is an expected and encouraged facet of VEX competitions. No one is born an expert in robotics! However, obstacles should always be viewed as teaching opportunities, not tasks for an adult to solve without Students present and actively participating.

When a mechanism falls off, it is…

  • Okay for an adult to help a Student investigate why it failed, so it can be improved.
  • Not okay for an adult to put the Robot back together.

When a Team encounters a complex programming concept, it is…

  • Okay for an adult to guide a Student through a flowchart to understand its logic.
  • Not okay for an adult to write a pre-made command for that Student to copy/paste.

During Match play, it is...

  • Okay for an adult to provide cheerful, positive encouragement as a spectator.
  • Not okay for an adult to explicitly shout step-by-step commands from the audience.

By submitting your registration and payment via eventbrite you are agreeing that you understand the rules and competion and have watched the VEX Robotics Competition Tower Takeover: 2019 - 2020 VRC Game video

Registration Deadline is August 1, 2019.

All team registrations are final, no refunds will be given. Please contact compexhibits@arlingtoncountyfair.us with questions.
