Session 01: "Prop 65 Compliance for Foods & Supplements"
by Lance Harding, Quality Consultant

Presentation synopsis: An overview will be given of California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act known as ‘Prop 65.’ Will discuss how this applies to foods and dietary supplements sold in California, determining limits for individual products, possible allowances that may increase the specific limit for that foods (and associated risks of using these allowances), and how the law is enforced. Will discuss establishing a compliance monitoring program for use during product development and marketing, options if you are at/over the limits, and how to respond if you are targeted for enforcement.

BIO: Lance Harding was the Vice President for Quality Assurance at Herbalife, working there for 20 years in Quality and Regulatory Affairs. He is currently a consultant to FDA regulated industries for all aspects of quality, regulatory, and product development. He is a registered pharmacist with an MBA, US Regulatory Affairs Certified (RAC) from RAPS, Lead Instructor for Preventive Controls for Human Food & Foreign Supplier Verification Programs from FSPCA, Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) and Certified HACCP Auditor (CHA) from ASQ. He has previously worked with biologic and pharmaceutical products for Allergan, Pharmacia and The Upjohn Company.

Session 02: "Transforming our Culture of Safety to Achieve ZERO Harm"
by Denise Ronquillo, Dir Corp Excellence, & Neña La Scala, Director - Emanate Healthcare

Presentation synopsis: Emanate Health exists to help people keep well in body, mind and spirit by providing quality health care services in a safe, compassionate environment. In 2014, Emanate Health entered its journey to high reliability through a partnership with The Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare. In pursuing excellence, the focus was on improving processes. Lean Six Sigma and Change Management provided a necessary systematic approach to problem solving. Emanate Health supports the implementation of a safety culture: to report, to improve, and to develop trust through the use of Lean Six Sigma and Robust Process Improvement® tools.

Today, Emanate Health has experienced a cultural transformation driven by a Lean Six Sigma Society that has grown to over 600 individuals. Emanate Health trained Green Belts and Certified Lean Agents include the CEO, hospital leaders, front line staff, board members, private practice physicians, and community partners. The society improves Emanate Health’s toughest health care challenges with over 170 Lean Six Sigma projects completed. Every project makes an improvement and every improvement benefits the patient.

This presentation will highlight the history and impact Lean Six Sigma has had on cultural transformation at Emanate Health. This will be shown with examples of reduced patient harm and improved patient safety. A new data driven culture has emerged as the result of Lean Six Sigma and all levels of the organization have experienced this systematic approach to problem solving that has improved processes and quality patient care.

BIO: Denise V. Ronquillo, CSSBB, Corporate Director, Process Excellence: In her current role as Corporate Director of Process Excellence, Denise is responsible for the management, development and deployment of Lean Six Sigma activities throughout Citrus Valley Health Partners. Denise collaborates with all levels of hospital leadership to identify, prioritize, plan, and execute Lean Six Sigma initiatives that focus on enhancing patient safety, improving quality of care and outcomes, eliminating waste, increasing productivity, and reducing costs. Denise trains and mentors staff, leadership, physicians, and partners in Robust Process Improvement, Lean Six Sigma, process improvement tools, and cultural change strategies. As a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), Denise is an organizational resource in advanced analytics, using various statistical analysis tools and techniques. Denise received her Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She received Green Belt certification from both the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Prior to her current position in Process Excellence, Denise was the Assistant Director of Performance Improvement at Citrus Valley Health Partners. Denise has over 30 years of healthcare experience.

Nena La Scala, CSSBB, Director of Lean Six Sigma Development: For the last three years, Nena La Scala has held the position of Director of Lean Six Sigma Development at Emanate Health. In her role, she is responsible for Lean Six Sigma deployment and education throughout the organization. Nena developed and manages the Lean training and certification program. As a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), Nena supports the infrastructure that integrates Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques throughout the organization. Nena trains and mentors staff, physicians, leadership and partners in the use of Lean Six Sigma and Change Management tools and strategies, as well as the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) methodologies. Nena develops structures to support the integration of change management tools and techniques throughout the organization and leads change management as a cultural change. Nena facilitates successful improvement initiatives across multiple functional areas. Before her directorship, Nena was the Patient Experience and Provider Relations Manager for Emanate Health’s Inter- Community Hospital. Her role included training and education of the organization- wide “Class ACT” and “Building Connections” employee behavioral program initiatives. Nena has over 20 years of healthcare experience. Nena received her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management from the University of La Verne and completed the MBA program at Louisiana State University in 2019.
