Event Details

CAIC's 2018 Winter Lieder Lounge is a special event examining where the worlds of Art Song and Literature converge.

The Fine Things of Youth tells the haunting story of a brief, misbegotten affair between an impressionable young music student, Lucy Gayheart, and a charismatic singer, and a charismatic singer, Clement Sebastian.  Lucy leaves small-town Nebraska to pursue musical studies in Chicago and as fate would have it, become rehearsal accompanist to Sebastian. The piece, an adaptation of Willa Cather’s Lucy Gayheart, draws squarely on the classical song repertory woven throughout the novel set in early 20th-century Chicago.  The songs provide an achingly beautiful backdrop for a story that opens in lightness and darkens with struggle and loss. Altogether, the story offers an eloquent meditation on what it means to be alive, and to endure.

Conceived and directed by Thomas Gallagher, the piece was first featured at the Cather International Seminar held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2015. CAIC is proud to be part of the consortium bringing the piece to Chicago.  The Winter Lieder Lounge performance will feature Chicago-based baritone Evan Bravos, actress Jill Anderson, and CAIC co-founder, pianist Shannon McGinnis.
