Description

2018 VIRTUES* Summit

Bridging the gap between curriculum and industry

March 1-2, 2018 | JMU X-Labs | Harrisonburg, VA
*Virginia Industry Resources Through Undergraduate Education Summit

Are you aware of a technology that could transform your industry but you don’t have time to explore it? Does your organization have long–range design problems that you don’t have the resources to solve yourself? What if you could hire graduates who are ready to start working on your top needs from Day One?

The 2018 VIRTUES Summit will focus on strategic coordination between higher education and industry with the aim of fostering creative, confident and market-ready students who are experienced in emerging technologies.

JMU X-Labs is entering its third year collaborating with distinguished government and industry organizations that give interdisciplinary student teams real-world experience. We invite industry professionals who are eager to plug into our expanding programs to come work directly with students and faculty from universities across the commonwealth and form mentorships with exceptional students.

Descriptions for Friday Sessions

  1. Session 1 – Transform courses into partnerships (Friday, 9:15-10:30 am)
Higher education, particularly at the undergraduate level, is built around courses. We have developed a process that incorporates student-learning outcomes into problem and technology-focused courses. Panelists in this session will discuss the planning and processes used to make that transformation.
  2. Session 2 – Discover partnership benefits (Friday, 10:45-12:00 pm)
Partnerships between institutions, private industry, and the commonwealth can benefit everyone involved. Panelists in this session will lead a discussion and share insights into how each of the stakeholders can benefit from these rich, engaging partnerships.
  3. Session 3 – Ideate & collaborate (Friday, 12:45-1:30 pm)
The real work of the summit will take place during this third session. Bring your best problems, emerging technology, and ideas for overarching concepts to the table. Be part of the process to develop new course concepts, sponsor problems, and engage with other stakeholders to shape the future.
