OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Discuss through oral presentations the identification, prevention, and management of common abdominal, hip & pelvis injury in athletes.
2. Review signs, symptoms, incidence, risks, and precautions relative to common abdominal, hip & pelvis injury in athletes.
3. Discuss current trends in sports medicine with respect to common abdominal, hip & pelvis injury in athletes.


CREDIT:    The University of Oklahoma Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc., to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers.

 
Approval is pending from the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure & Supervision, Physical Therapy Advisory Committee for approval of Category A hours for physical therapists.

L. Michael Brunt, MD 

L. Michael Brunt, M.D., is professor of surgery in the Department of Surgery’s Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery and is a recognized leader and clinical expert in laparoscopic, endocrine and hernia surgery.Brunt received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi in 1976 and his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1980. He then trained in general surgery at Washington University and held a two-year postgraduate research fellowship in immunology within the Department of Pathology. He started clinical practice on the faculty in 1990 and achieved the rank of professor in 2006.Brunt was one of the first Washington University physicians to fully adopt laparoscopic surgery and is internationally recognized for his work in laparoscopic adrenalectomy. He is Team Surgeon for the St. Louis Blues and has a nationwide referral practice for collegiate and professional athletes with sports hernias. He has been listed in Best Doctors in America® from 1996 through 2008 and has been the referral surgeon for numerous faculty, fellow surgeons and their families.Brunt has been a leader in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons’ (SAGES) effort to educate surgeons worldwide in minimally invasive surgery, and developed a comprehensive video teaching series in the field. A gifted professor, Brunt was voted Clinical Teacher of the Year by the medical students five times between 2000 and 2006. In 2002, he received the School of Medicine’s Samuel Goldstein Leadership Award in Medical Student Education.

Jim Hillis, PT, ATC

A Registered Physical Therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer, Jim commenced his tenure with the University of Oklahoma in June 2000, as Coordinator of Rehabilitation. Jim was previously employed by St. Anthony North as Director of the Athletic Trainer Network and a Staff Physical Therapist. Jim obtained his physical therapy degree from the University of Oklahoma. He has worked with athletes in USA Basketball, Pan American Games, the United States Olympic Center, College, and high school. A past President, Vice President, and Secretary of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association, Jim is a member of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame.

Don McGinnis, MD 

Dr. Donald McGinnis is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon in Oklahoma City.  He obtained his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.  Dr. McGinnis completed his internship in general surgery and residency in orthopedics at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.  In addition, Dr. McGinnis completed a fellowship in Knee, Shoulder and Sports Medicine at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. McGinnis is a Clinical Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.  Dr. McGinnis serves as a Team Physician for the University of Oklahoma Athletic Department and the U.S. Snowboarding Team.  Dr. McGinnis sees patients in Midtown, Norman, Edmond and Kingfisher. He and his wife, Stacy, live in Edmond, Oklahoma and have four children; Austin, Tyler, Conner and Garrett.

Charles Pasque, MD 

Charles B Pasque, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine. His expertise includes arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, and elbow. Dr. Pasque earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, OK in 1990. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1995. He continued his specialized education and training with a Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine Center in Cincinnati, OH in 1996. Dr. Pasque serves as Team Physician for the University of Oklahoma Athletic Department.

Dr. Pasque has held the J Andy Sullivan Chair in Orthopedic Surgery Resident Education as the Program Director of the Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation department since 2006. He is also a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve.

Brock Schnebel, MD 

An Oklahoma native, Dr. Schnebel is a clinical associate professor at the University of Oklahoma, Division of Sports Medicine.  He completed his medical education at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine followed by fellowships in trauma in Austria, spine surgery at the Alamo Bone and Joint Association in San Antonio, and the Kerlan Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.  After a fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Basel in Switzerland, he joined McBride Clinic/Bone & Joint Hospital in 1987.  Dr. Schnebel serves as the Head Team Physician for the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department and has worked with the Olympics since 1990.  Having served on the medical staff for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, he was chosen by the United States Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Committee to serve as the head physician for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia.
