Description

Qords camp 2018

At camp we teach campers instrument instruction, song-writing, and how to work together in groups to form a band. We coach campers on performance and host workshops on queer heroes, social justice, consent, gender, as well as engage in fun activities such as dance, archery and plant identification hikes! Camp is a 5 day long, overnight experience. At the end of camp we host a final showcase where all campers play their tunes in front of an audience!

This online registration form also contains a scholarship application and deposit payment. If you have any questions please contact qords@qords.org

What previous attendees have to say

"If I had never came to QORDS I would have never gotten the confidence to pursue the Uke. I would have never made such wonderful friends. I have made memories that I KNOW will last me a lifetime and longer." - Shay, Previous camper

"QORDS Camp was an amazing experience for my child. They never before even expressed interest in going to any type of camp, so I was surprised when they shared the QORDS information with me. I was nervous, but excited for my child to have this experience. The first thing they said to me at the end of the week was, “I would willingly give up my cell phone for longer if I could just stay at camp.” And that’s from a 14-year-old! QORDS does an amazing job and creates a wonderful, welcoming, safe space. My child made great friends and is counting down the days to camp this year." - Danielle, Parent of a camper

"Becoming a QORDS camp counselor was one of the best things I've ever done. By connecting with the younger members of my community I've found a home for myself. QORDS to me is about nourishing your inner voice so that you can sing your true self." - Rae, previous camp counselor

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO SUPPORT QORDS CAMP. WHERE DO I APPLY?
A: Wonderful and thank you for being interested in volunteering for QORDS camp! This year QORDS camp will have two sessions. The first session will be for youth ages 12-14 from August 12-17. The second session will be for youth ages 15-17 from August 19-24. We are looking for volunteers for either one full session or two full sessions. You can apply for a volunteer staff position here.

Q: CAN PARENTS OF CAMPERS VOUNTEER AT QORDS CAMP?
A: Thank you for your interest in helping out at camp! QORDS is a parent-free zone. The campers are creating a unique environment and safe space with each other. We ask that parents respect the community that is being created. Plus, there are tons of great ways to get involved and support QORDS camp for the rest of the year. To help with outreach, fundraising, or other creative supportive ideas contact QORDS@QORDS.ORG.

Q: HOW ARE CAMPERS SORTED INTO CABINS FOR CAMP?
A: Youth are sorted into cabins by age not gender because many of our campers are non-binary or genderfluid. There are 6-8 campers in one cabin with a staff cabin in between.

Q: DO CAMPERS NEED TO HAVE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE TO COME TO CAMP?
A: Nope! While those with musical experience are certainly encouraged, previous musical instruction is not required. Campers will be taught an instrument of their choice as well as take part in performance and song-writing workshops. Campers work together with other campers to form bands and write songs. Camp counselors and workshop instructors will be on-site to help campers cultivate their musical talents!

Q: CAN CAMPERS BRING THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS?
A: If campers have an instrument they want to bring, that is great! Just be sure it is labeled with the camper’s name. Instruments will be available at camp, so all campers will have an opportunity to play an instrument whether or not they bring one from home.

Q: HOW MANY COUNSELORS ARE THERE?
A: Our ratio of staff to campers is high. We have five or six counselors onsite all week, with other counselors attending at different points to lead workshops. Our ratio is usually 1:1 or 1:2 every day.

Q: WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS OF CAMP STAFF?
A: QORDS was founded by a licensed clinical social worker who will be onsite the full week. All counselors must have background checks and most are personally known to the core organizers. Counselors are selected based on specific skills needed at camp as well as ensuring that different identities are represented. In addition, several staff are trained in CPR/first aid and knowledgeable about emergency procedures. You can read more about the organizers on the about page.

Q: WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
A: All electronic devices (phones, tablets, etc) need to be turned in to parents or guardians in front of QORDS staff at drop off at camp. We need to see this exchange so we can log it. Another option is for phones to be turned into QORDS staff and held in the staff cabin until the bus ride to the venue after camp.

Q: HOW CAN I GET IN TOUCH WITH MY CHILD DURING CAMP?
A: Parents will be provided with phone numbers for camp staff who will be onsite all week. Parents are welcome to contact staff to check in on campers or in case of an emergency.

Q: CAN I SEND A LETTER OR CARE PACKAGE TO MY CHILD?
A: Yes! You can mail letters or cards to the campsite to arrive during the week. One camper even got a letter from their dog!

Q: ARE THERE OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES?
A: The only time campers will leave camp property is during transport to the performance venue on the last day of camp.

Q: DO CAMPERS GO SWIMMING?
A: Although there are swimming facilities at the camp, we do not take our campers swimming. We are having too much fun making music!

Q: IS THE SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE AT THE END OF CAMP FOR FAMILY ONLY?
A: The showcase performance is open to the public! To give campers a real performance experience QORDS will announce the showcase performance locally, and we hope that family invites friends to come and join in the experience!

Q: CAN THE CAMPERS KEEP IN TOUCH AFTER CAMP?
A: Campers are able to exchange contact info at camp and we also form a private facebook group each year for that year's campers and staff to stay in touch. Campers are not allowed to exchange personal contact info with camp staff.

Q: I WANT TO VOLUNTEER AT CAMP, BUT I CANNOT STAY THE ENTIRE WEEK AS A CAMP COUNSELOR, WHAT OTHER ROLES ARE THERE?
A: There are many ways to get involved with camp! We are looking for workshop leaders, photographers, videographers, and those who might be able to help with set up or break down of both the camp and the showcase performance. To find out more information contact us AT QORDS@QORDS.ORG or check out our volunteer page to get involved not only at camp but at year-round events!
