Event Details

This series of six workshops addresses specific issues that can improve communication and interaction with loved ones with dementia or memory loss. This is a wonderful opportunity for those actively caring for someone with cognitive impairment to be interactive and learn techniques that will really make a difference in day-to-day care -- whether you are family or friend, neighbor, or a professional caregiver.

The trainer, Dorothy Colby, is a Certified Positive Approach to Dementia Care (TM) Trainer and national mentor, with more than 20 years of professional and personal experience caring for people with dementia. She is Administrator for Hale Ku'ike Memory Care Home in Nu'uanu, where she also trains staff. Positive Approach to Care (TM) seminars, developed by occupational therapist Teepa Snow, provide essential information for families and care partners on how to have a positive and meaningful relationship with loved ones with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia throughout their journey.

Refreshments will be provided.

Please arrive 15 minutes early to park and register. Thanks!

Detailed parking instructions will be sent to registrants prior to workshops

These workshops are made possible by a grant from the Administration for Community Living given to UH Center on Aging for the Alzheimer's Disease Initiative - Specialized Supportive Services Program. The Hawaii grant aims to strengthen the dementia-capability of Hawaii's communities by expanding person-centered practices that will enable people with dementia and their caregivers and families to have greater access to a continuum of long-term services and supports into the future. These workshops given by Dorothy Colby will benefit dementia caregivers on six different topics that are important parts of their their caregiving journey.

Grant leads: Christy Nishita, PhD, Principal Investigator, Researcher UH Center on Aging; Ritabelle Fernandes, MD, CO-PI; Jody Mishan, Project Consultant
