Event description

Description

The 2012 National Design Award winner for Communication Design and guest curator of a new exhibition at Cooper Hewitt, Rebeca Méndez will discuss how art and design can serve as a force for social and environmental change. Following the discussion, Méndez will lead a tour of Rebeca Méndez Selects, for which she assembled design objects from Cooper Hewitt’s permanent collection, bird specimens from the National Museum of Natural History, and rare books from the Smithsonian Libraries to evoke the tensions arising from humankind’s conflicting impulses towards nature.

Founder of Rebeca Méndez Design in 1996, Méndez dedicates at least half of her design work to pro bono and social causes. A multidisciplinary designer and artist, Méndez also founded Counterforce Lab, a research and fieldwork studio at UCLA using art and design to develop and execute projects addressing climate change.
