DAY TWO March 23, 2018: Creative Play Therapy Interventions for Children and Families Coping with Loss

When children enter play therapy because they have experienced a significant loss, they are at a very vulnerable time in their lives. They are often anxious about the therapeutic process and reluctant to talk directly about painful feelings. Activities that are creative and play-based can engage children and help them to express their thoughts and feelings. This workshop will present a brief theoretical overview followed by a variety of play therapy interventions to assess and treat children and families coping with loss. A range of innovative activities will be outlined, including therapeutic games, art, and stories. Although the focus of this workshop will be on bereavement and divorce, many of the interventions can be adapted for other treatment populations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define grief, traumatic grief, and disenfranchised grief.

  2. Identify common risk factors associated with children coping with bereavement and divorce.

  3. Describe the unique treatment issues of children in play therapy who are coping with suicide and homicide bereavement.

  4. Describe the continuum of parent-child relationships after separation and divorce.

  5. Implement at least 2 play therapy techniques to assess children and families coping with loss.

  6. Apply at least 5 play therapy interventions in sessions with children and families coping with loss.
