U.S. Green Building Council New York Upstate , Finger Lakes Institute, and Corning Incorporated

will host the 2018 Finger Lakes Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) Symposium

Thursday, August 9, at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY ­

The symposium, in its 5th year, will include a keynote speaker and presentations by some of the area’s top professionals in the fields of water quality, invasive species management, and HABs identification. Last year’s event attracted nearly 100 members of the public, and included presenters from the Finger Lakes Water Hub, Rochester Institute of Technology, and O’Brien & Gere.

HABs

HABs are certain types of algae which negatively impact water quality and produce toxins harmful to people and animals. HABs have been found in most counties in New York, including in most of the Finger Lakes, prompting Governor Andrew Cuomo to launch a $65 million plan last year to address issues caused by the invasive species.
