About The Performance:

The Magic Doll Shop
Once upon a time in a country far away lived a doll maker, Hans, who lived alone above his doll shop in a quaint village. Now Hans was not your ordinary doll maker; there was something a bit strange about him…or was it whimsical, perhaps even magical? He would carve, decorate and paint his dolls during the day, but at night he would open a great big book and carefully read passages from the worn pages. In what could only be called magical, his dolls would then become life-size the next day! Could it be his special book? Makes you wonder, huh?

Of all his nieces and nephews, Swanhilda was the one who loved the shop the most. Her uncle had taught her to carve and paint their faces and even how to sew their little outfits. As Swanhilda got older, she got more and more curious as to how Uncle Hans could make his dolls look so lifelike. She had carved many dolls by now and she still could not make her dolls look as real as his.

Each year Swanhilda and her family made the long, cold journey to his village for the holidays. This year she was excited for a new project and the new doll her uncle would give her for Christmas. One night while they were there and everyone was asleep, she snuck into his shop. While looking closely at the dolls from far away countries, she found her uncle’s old book. Always a mischievous child, she opened it and discovered what appeared to be a book of poems. What she didn’t realize was that her uncle was really a wizard and the poems were incantations! She read through a few poems and one by one all the dolls came to life! It was magical! As the dolls danced around, she joined in. Wondering what the noise was all about, Hans came down to see his shop in a frenzy of dance. At first, he was angry with Swanhilda, but she pleaded with him to let the fun continue. He saw the joy in her eyes and could not say no. One by one Hans’s dolls had come to life in a joyous celebration of the many countries they represented!
