Event description

Description

In central Pennsylvania, 1 in 6 children struggles with food insecurity. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank works with over 250 youth program partners throughout the region to ensure that many of these children have enough to eat year-round. Nevertheless, hunger still affects far too many children and their families. At the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we believe that no one should be hungry, and especially no child should be hungry, so we are hosting an innaugural Child Hunger Summit for the region, free of charge and open to all.

Health professionals, educators, social service workers, and hunger fighters from across central Pennsylvania will convene for a day of three-part workshops centered around addressing childhood hunger. The workshops will begin with topic foundations, then bring in experts to share their real experiences, and end with a hands-on training so that all attendees leave equipped to make a difference in their communities. Attendees may choose one of four workshop pathways:

Program Growth and Innovation

The causes of child hunger are complex, and there is much that can be done to address them. This workshop covers the basics of funding and developing new, growing, or innovative child hunger programs. Participants will hear from local experts operating unique and successful youth programs across central Pennsylvania as they explain how and why they do what they do. The day ends with a hands-on tutorial on how to set goals and and evaluate program success.

Food for the Family

It is likely that if a child is hungry, his family is hungry, too. This workshop explores different ways the Food Bank, schools, and partner programs are addressing food insecurity in central Pennsylvania and then focuses on how these "youth programs" can serve as catalysts to bring food to the whole family. Participants will be walked through the process of establishing child hunger programs, opportunities for expansion, and the many resources available to support these programs. The day will end with a workshop exploring community development initiatives to improve food access for families beyond the traditional charitable food network.

Child Health & Nutrition

Children living in poverty or struggling with food insecurity are at a greater risk for a number of physical, mental, and emotional health factors. This workshop covers the basics of health risks for children living in poverty and other challenges faced by food insecure families. School meals are at the forefront of addressing child food insecurity, so the workshop will include a panel of experts making child nutrition needs a priority for schools. To end, participants will simulate the challenges of eating healthy with a low income and learn how school and supplemental programs can be used to help families build healthy menus.

Advocacy and Coalition Building

It takes a village! Ensuring that no child goes hungry is a community effort. This workshop will cover the various federal, state, and local programs that are essential to feeding children in our communities. A panel of professionals from multiple backgrounds involved in this work will share how they are working across industries to build communities dedicated to ending and preventing hunger. The workshop will end with a walkthrough on where to begin with advocating for children and how to bring multiple voices to the table by building a community coalition.
