Description

The California Social Welfare Archives (CSWA) will hold its Annual Awards Reception on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 in the Grand Ballroom at Radisson Hotel Los Angeles at USC. A light supper buffet and reception at 5:00 will be followed at 6:00 by the guest speaker and awards presentation. All are welcome! Please share this invitation with your colleagues!

Tickets for the fundraiser are $45 per person. A limited quantity of sponsored tickets will be made available to MSW students. Contact us at cswa@usc.edu or 213-743-0201 to inquire about a sponsored ticket. USC internal requisitions are also accepted (Make selections and select "Pay by Invoice").

This year’s honorees are:

Daniel Heimpel - Guest speaker and recipient of the George D. Nickel Award for Outstanding Contributions to Social Welfare

Harnessing the Power of Investigative Journalism to Serve the Vulnerable

Daniel Heimpel is the founder of Fostering Media Connections, a national non-profit news organization dedicated to issues facing vulnerable children youth and their families, an educator and an award winning journalist. He has taught graduate students on the intersection of journalism and child policy at USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, and the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy and Practice. In addition, through the Journalism for Social Change Massive Open Online Course, offered on the edX learning platform, Heimpel has trained thousands of students globally. He has written and produced stories about vulnerable children for Newsweek, Los Angeles Daily News, LA Weekly, Seattle Times, Oprah Winfrey Network, KPCC and KCRW among others. This coverage has garnered him many journalism awards, including from the Children’s Advocacy Institute, Los Angeles Press Club, North American Resource Center for Child Welfare, National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Child Welfare League of America, and California Mental Health Advocates for Children and Youth.

Alex Morales - George D. Nickel Award for Outstanding Professional Services by a Social Worker

After 30 years of service to the well-being of children and families, Children’s Bureau’s President & CEO Alex Morales recently announced his retirement. Morales’ visionary leadership has guided the 113-year-old nonprofit to pioneer efforts in the child abuse prevention and treatment arena that has impacted thousands of vulnerable children and families both locally and nationwide.

Tena M. Nelson, PhD - Frances Lomas Feldman Excellence in Education Award

In addition to her work as an educator and practitioner, Dr. Nelson's pioneering efforts to improve social work practice in the public sector truly embody the legacy of Frances Lomas Feldman. By developing innovative delivery forums for professional social work training and licensure preparation, her initiatives have uniquely supported professional social work education and workforce preparedness and retention.
